In any professional setting, ensuring a clean and safe environment is of utmost importance. Cleaning employees and staff play a crucial role in upholding hygiene standards, but their responsibilities extend beyond just tidying up. Understanding and being well-informed about blood-borne pathogens is essential for these individuals, as it contributes to both their safety and the well-being of those they serve. Blood-borne pathogens are microorganisms that can be transmitted through blood or other bodily fluids, carrying potential risks of infections. Cleaning personnel, who often come into direct contact with various surfaces and materials, must be educated about the risks and preventive measures associated with blood-borne pathogens.

Comprehensive Training for Infection Control: One of the primary reasons cleaning employees should have a solid grasp of blood-borne pathogens is to minimize the risk of spreading infections. Proper training empowers them to identify potential hazards, handle potentially contaminated items with care, and use appropriate protective gear. By knowing how blood-borne pathogens can be transmitted and understanding the proper cleaning protocols, employees can significantly contribute to reducing the risk of infections within the workplace.

Protecting Both Employees and Occupants: Maintaining a safe environment not only safeguards cleaning staff but also the occupants of the facility. A thorough understanding of blood-borne pathogens equips cleaning personnel to take necessary precautions, such as using gloves, masks, and other protective equipment. This not only protects employees from potential infections but also prevents the unintentional transmission of pathogens to others. By emphasizing the importance of this knowledge, businesses can create a healthier and more secure workspace for everyone involved.

In conclusion, the significance of educating cleaning employees and staff about blood-borne pathogens cannot be overstated. Their role in maintaining a clean and hygienic environment directly impacts the well-being of everyone within the facility. Equipping them with knowledge and training empowers them to contribute effectively to infection control, ensuring the safety and health of both employees and occupants. Ultimately, investing in the education of cleaning personnel is an investment in the overall well-being of the workplace.

I've just started in the janitorial field and I do not know anything about bloodborne pathogens really. I think as a new employee it's very important that we get the straining so we can become familiar and understand and recognize how infectious diseases work and how at risk we truly are. I would smash down the garbage and not even think twice about what was in there. I will never do that again thanks to this course.

I am taking this course all on my own without my employers making me do it but I will be a strong advocate from here on out believing that our department should take these courses. We can learn a lot about bloodborne pathogens and how they can easily get into our body when we are handling everyday material. I don't believe it's something that we think about unless you have taken this class.

I believe I have learned a lot about keeping myself safe and my co-workers safer. I will be using PPE a lot more and be a lot more cautious with how I handle the trashes and bodily fluids from here on out.

Staff tasked with handling bodily fluids and materials contaminated face a set of risks due to potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, which includes viruses such as Hepatitis B and C as well as HIV. Ensuring staff is educated about transmission of said diseases, prevention protocols, and protective equipment available is critical to employee and public safety. An in-depth understanding will enable staff to plan and take appropriate precautions, such as PPE, specialized cleaning agents, and specific waste disposal protocols. By recognizing the importance of bloodborne pathogens, staff can move forward in a safe manor while contributing to a safer environment for the public.

In addition to having staff educated and comprehending the dangers of bloodborne pathogens would imply better protections to the environment as well as their personal well-being. These members of staff play an important role in preventing the spread of disease and infection in the workplace. Their awareness helps maintain the overall health and safety of the entire staff and visitors to the area they are working in. AA well informed cleaning team member can ensure best practice that align with industry standards that will better support other members of staff not in a cleaning role, as working in a contaminated environment is highly dangerous and distracting, By investing in education and training surrounding bloodborne pathogens a business is not only prioritizing their health of staff but is also encouraging an atmosphere of responsibility and professionalism that will be felt through out the workplace.

Lastly, the importance of staff comprehending the risks involved with bloodborne pathogens and the importance of hygiene cannot be underestimated. Their role in maintaining a clean environment is vital, especially when considering the damage that would occur without proper protocol involved and the extreme pain, suffering, and death that can occur from bloodborne pathogen exposure. Staff with the knowledge of proper cleaning practices and also remaining cautious of bloodborne pathogens empowers then to protect themselves allowing for a longer safer career, prevent the spread of infection, and contribute to the well being of all in the workplace even visitors.

Everyday chemical cleaning products pose harm to our health, they contain toxic ingredients and prolonged exposure or inhalation to these chemicals can result in respiratory problems as compared to #greencleaningproducts that do not pose health effects.

Secondly, chemical cleaning products contain substances such as chlorine and ammonia which pose a threat to the environment. When these chemicals are washed down the drain, they can pollute waterways, harm aquatic life and contribute to water pollution as compared to going green when cleaning to avoid the above.

Thirdly, many cleaning chemicals release volatile organic compounds into the air which can lead to indoor air pollution. These VOCs can contribute to indoor air quality especially in poorly ventilated areas. To avoid this  shift to green cleaning products.

Cleaning products with strong acids and alkalis can be corrosive and cause damage to surfaces such as floors, countertops and furniture. With time, the repeated use of these chemicals can weaken and deteriorate surfaces, leading to costly repairs.

Lastly, cleaning chemicals can be sensitive to pets as they directly come  in contact with the surfaces and floors. By using #greencleaning products for your house / home you will be prioritizing on the health of your pets. The mentioned points are in reference to IJCSA Green Cleaning Directory.

My dad retired from janitorial cleaning 5 years ago. He was in the business for over 40 years, It never dawned on me how important it was to our daily lives. Now that I am older and into the cleaning business I see the importance of it.

Janitors and janitorial staff are very important in our daily lives. They make sure that private restrooms as well as public restrooms are cleaned and sanitized. Would you want to enter a restroom that is unsanitary? or one that smells badly? It definitely takes constant effort and attention to detail to keep a public building clean and sanitary.

Janitors and janitorial staff are trained on how to properly clean a restroom. What color cloths to use. How to pre spray sinks, urinals, toilets and surrounding areas. How to properly clean a urinal. They are also trained in Bloodborne pathogen. I have learned alot over the years and I will use all information and resources to the best of my ability.

Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms that can cause disease in humans. They are found in human blood and other bodily fluids, such as saliva, semen, and vaginal fluids. Bloodborne pathogens can be transmitted through contact with blood or other bodily fluids, such as through a needlestick injury or a cut on the skin.

Janitors are at an increased risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens because they may come into contact with blood or other bodily fluids while cleaning up accidents or spills. For example, a janitor might clean up a blood spill in a hospital or a school.

It is important for janitorial staff to know about bloodborne pathogens so that they can take steps to protect themselves from exposure. Some of the things that janitorial staff can do to protect themselves from exposure to bloodborne pathogens include:

    • Wearing gloves, gowns, and masks when cleaning up blood or other bodily fluids.
    • Using proper cleaning procedures, such as using bleach to disinfect surfaces that have been contaminated with blood or other bodily fluids.
    • Reporting any exposure to blood or other bodily fluids to their supervisor immediately.

By taking these steps, janitorial staff can help to protect themselves from exposure to bloodborne pathogens and prevent the spread of disease.

In addition to the above, here are some other things that janitorial staff can do to protect themselves from exposure to bloodborne pathogens:

    • Get vaccinated against hepatitis B.
    • Wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water after cleaning up blood or other bodily fluids.
    • Avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or applying cosmetics while cleaning up blood or other bodily fluids.
    • Dispose of sharps properly.
    • Report any injuries or exposures to their supervisor immediately.
