“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” ~ Benjamin Franklin

In other words, it is better to stop something bad from happening than it is to deal with it after it has happened.

As janitorial professionals, we have a duty to prevent the spread of infection and to also protect ourselves in the process.  The best way to do that is through education of the Bloodborne Policies and Procedures.  Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is our last line of defense.

In order to protect employees from Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP), it is important to create a BBP Exposure Control Plan and implement policies and procedures for them to follow.  The BBP should be reviewed annually and updated as required.

Bloodborne Pathogens are microorganisms that may be present in human blood and cause disease such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.  There are also other potentially infectious materials which include other body fluids, human tissues and cultures.  Since we are not certain of the infection status, we should assume that all materials are infectious and MUST follow Universal Precautions.

The presence of known biohazards must be communicated via warning signs and labels, as well as color coded containers.  The potential of occupational transmission includes puncture injuries such as needlesticks, scalpels, breaks in the skin or exposure via mucous membranes (ie. Eyes, nose or mouth)

In the event of exposure involving BBP, one should immediately implement the Post Exposure Protocol.

Optimum Cleaning, although not fully in operation yet, has made plans to implement a product line that is certified green as is the company that uses them. When selecting products for our company, our focus is on minimizing or eliminating products that contain chemicals generally recognized as unsafe.

Toxins in the products that are available in todays market can cause so many acute and chronic health effects; it would be a disservice to our customers if we used products that could actually cause them harm, while attempting at cleaning their spaces to make them safer.

Optimum Cleaning recognizes that we have a commitment to protecting the health and well being of our customers as well as the health of our planet. Environmentally friendly products that clean and disinfect as good or better than conventional commercial products are the preferred method.

Having a Mold remediation or handling plan is very important because often when cleaners in our industry are shown mold by the customer. A large group of us (esp. in Colorado, where we don't see a lot of mold) often misdiagnose the situation and treat mold as if it were a stain that needs to be removed.

Improper handling of mold can lead to serious illness and even death. So treating it like its not serious is like treating peoples health like its not serious. Which is just dangerous. Proper training programs like the ones offered here. Are a great way to have a plan in place to help protect you and your customer when dealing with mold.
