It should be a priority to keep staff informed and aware of potential hazards in any situation especially when there are risks involved such as bloodborne pathogens.  Taking precautions should be a number 1 priority.

Employers are responsible for the safety of staff and making sure materials are handled correctly and disposed of properly. This effects everyones safety and keeps risk of exposure down to a minimum.

If Osha standard practices are implemented risk of exposure will be minimized.  If exposure does happen it is the employers responsibility to follow guidelines and keep records for 3 years .

Bloodborne pathogens safety precautions are a necessity to know about in the janitorial setting, regardless of the facility or area being cleaned. Though it is more relevant to know about in the healthcare setting, it is just as important in other settings as well. Anything could happen: an injury could happen, which could cause the need to clean up blood; a bloody nose could suddenly need to be cleaned up; the possibilities are endless.

When considering the risk of bloodborne pathogens, though the likelihood of getting a virus is not high, the after effects of this are dangerous to anyone in the field. The effects could even be life threatening. Thus, though it is easy to say "The likelihood of contracting a virus are slim", always take proper precaution, and ensure that your staff are well trained, so that risks are mitigated.

Not only is it important to take necessary precautions when cleaning blood, it is equally important to also effectively clean the area where there was the exposure thoroughly. It is noted in various sources that bloodborne pathogens can last on surfaces for up to one week if not dealt with accordingly. Thus, it is important to ensure that extra attention is given to areas where there may be bloodborne pathogen spills/accidents.

5.6 million healthcare and janitorial workers are at risk of being exposed to bloodborne pathogens each day. These pathogens are found in human blood and cause diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDS. So it is very important to understand how to prevent exposure and the steps to take if you or another employee is exposed.

With being in the cleaning and janitorial industry you are likely going to come across situations where you run the risk of being exposed. The most common way to become infected is when the pathogens come in contact with your mucus membrane. Blood, vomit, or any bodily fluid from another person should always be considered potentially infectious, and should be approached with the OSHA guidelines. Areas with fluids should always be clean and disinfected. Gloves and other PPE should be worn and disposed properly in labeled bags. Washing your hands immediately after taking off PPE. All equipment used must be disinfected. And if exposed to contact your supervisor and physician immediately.

Keeping your company knowledgable on the risk of bloodborne pathogens can reduce the risk of exposure greatly. Making sure to annually go over OSHA's guidelines, training employees on how to properly handle a situation where exposure is possible, and knowing the steps to take if exposure does end up happening will help make for a clean and safe work environment for everyone.

AS IT RELATES TO IJCSA , THE ONLY PART OF THE MOLD CLEANING AND REMEDIATION TRAINING THAT I WILL BE WALKING AWAY WITH IS KNOWING WHEN TO CALL A SUB CONTRACTOR TO PROVIDE A SERVICE FOR A LARGER JOB THAT I EITHER DO NOT HAVE THE PPE FOR OR THE EQUIPMENT TO PERFORM.

A JOB THIS LARGE COULD DEFINITELY BE DETRIMENTAL TO MY HEALTH. I WOULD BE ABLE TO REMOVE MOLD IF IT WERE IN A RESIDENTIAL SETTING LIKE IN A BATHROOM. I MOST LIKELY WILL NOT TAKE ON LARGE COMMERCIAL BUILDING MOLD JOBS.I MAKE SURE THAT I STICK WITH THE  FLOOD SERVICE DIRECTORY WHICH YOU CAN FIND BELOW. THERE YOU WILL FIND QUALIFIED SPECIALIST THE DEDICATE THEIR WORK SPECIFICALY TO MOLD REMEDIATION.
