Harmful effects of using every day chemicals compared to using natural green products.

Cleaning is an essential part of life, whether we enjoy it or hate it, sooner than later it has to be done. Thankfully, you can hire a professional to take care of that problem for you. Another option, is of course, do it yourself, but we are aware that it takes a big portion of your time. So, if is an option, save yourself the hustle and call No More Mess Cleaning Services.

We all know that in order to disinfect, sanitize, deodorize, degrease and polish, we need the help of chemical products. But how far are we willing to compromise our health? Research demonstrates that the most acutely dangerous cleaning products are corrosive drain cleaners, oven cleaners, and acidic toilet bowl cleaners. On the other hand, products with high amounts of chlorine bleach and ammonia can irritate eyes, nose, throat and lungs, and should never be used by people with asthma, lung or heart problems. Even the health status of “perfectly healthy people” can be jeopardize due to every day chemical products.

In the study material from IJCSA Green Cleaning Certification, we learned that Chlorine is frequently involve in poisoning cases in the Unites States. Chlorine is toxic and negative not only for the health but also for the environment, it can also be dangerous to house pets.  Also another name that can be confused or perceived as a harmless agent is: Mineral oil. Mineral oil “is a derivative of petroleum. It can cause decreased absorption of vitamin A, and vitamin K in pregnant women. It is considered both carcinogenic and tumorigenic by RTECS criteria” (IJCSA)

My customers often ask me: what’s a good natural product to disinfect, other than bleach? According to the International Janitorial Cleaning Services Association, ethanol or 100 proof alcohol in solution with water, works as a good disinfector. Another option to disinfect is Borax. Borax is an important boron compound, a mineral, and a salt of boric acid. Powdered borax is white, consisting of soft colorless crystals that dissolve easily in water. Borax is a component of many detergents, cosmetics, and enamel glazes.

Some all-purpose cleaners contain diethanolamine (DEA) and triethanolamine (TEA) although, many all-purpose cleaners have low acute toxicity it can still contribute to “long-term health like cancer or hormone disorders”. Other effects to the health originating from every day cleaners are: decreased sperm counts, increased rates of male birth defects such as cryptorchidism (undescended testicles) and hypospadias.

Our environment suffers tremendously due to everyday cleaning chemicals. “Cleaning liquids disappear down our drains, threatening water quality, fish and other wildlife”. Also petroleum-based products contribute to the unnecessary consume of oil, a non-renewable resource. And let’s not forget, the negative impact of plastic bottles used to package cleaning products, currently some bottles are recycle but not in massive amounts.

We have to be conscious and take responsibility for our health, our environment, and the ecosystems around us. There are effective combinations of natural products that can help us to clean effectively, without causing danger. I encourage other cleaning professionals to take the IJCSA Green Cleaning Certification to learn more about safe alternatives, we have to look out for our employers, our clients, the environment and our own health.

Toxic chemical mixtures found in everyday cleaning chemicals have been found to give off severe adverse reaction to living organisms exposed to prolonged use. Over a period of time persons, pets and even plants have shown negative reactions that affect their over all health.

Everyday cleaning chemicals are costly in comparison to green cleaning products. The side effects of everyday using everyday cleaning products that could lead to hefty doctor bills, can be eliminated by using green products.

A company may have to deal with liability from workers and less productivity due to being sick more often.

There is also the effects on the environment, when these substances get into water ways it can cause significant issues for wildlife and humans. Also using products that are not biodegradable and items are not properly disposed of help to deplete the ozone layer making it hotter and hotter as the days go by.

As more and more people become health conscious and environmentally friendly, it is becoming increasingly important for companies to offer solutions that appeal to clients and also protect the environment and its surroundings.

I plan to implement green cleaning into my business by offering customers the option of having environmentally safe products used in their home or business.  I believe this will give customers a greater peace of mind and also shows that we care about their health and safety and also the environment.

The harmful effects of everyday cleaning products originate in the ingredients utilized to manufacture the products. The impacts the products have on organisms such as animals and humans. The lack of safety protocols provided when purchasing the products. The dangerous bi-products of inappropriately mixing products.

Many cleaning products contain phthalates which produce fragrances. Phthalates have been demonstrated in peer-reviewed research as weak endocrine disruptors. There are multiple exposure routes the main being inhalation and dermal. The main impact of phthalate exposure is reduced male fertility. However, there could be larger environmental impacts due to these products being excreted, not treated in waste management plants, and reaching aquatic life in the receiving environment. A greener choice would be to choose fragrance-free products.

Antibacterial agents now commonly found in cleaning products can often become a long-term issue. The concern of our time is the formation of resistant bacteria multiplying in sensitive environments such as healthcare facilities. There are now common strains in such facilities due to the extensive use of antibacterial agents in both cleaning and consumable products. Once resistant strains multiply they can infect immune-compromised individuals and cause resistant infections, to which we have to treatment besides trying multiple antibiotics until we hopefully find one that works, which sometimes is not the case. A better alternative would be to use physical methods along with diluted vinegar solution to eliminate harmful microbes. High temperatures and friction are often adequate methods and a green approach to reducing harmful bacteria from surfaces.

Ammonia is most dangerous to immediately exposed individuals such as those responsible for cleaning and those present during the cleaning. It is a volatile highly irritating substance. Ammonia will vaporize and be readily inhaled which will irritate the mucous membranes and could cause irreversible damage with long-term exposure. It is also very fast acting in terms of causing irritation, there is not much of an opportunity to rinse an exposure area and avoid damage. There are multiple green alternatives to ammonia including green stain removers and polishes which are the main uses for ammonia.

Sodium hypochlorite or bleach is dangerous if it directly comes into contact with the skin or mucous membranes. It can cause chemical burns and irritation very quickly. However, the main concern is if it is mixed with an acidic substance creating chlorine gas. Chlorine gas if inhaled will cause extreme pain and irreversible lung damage. The effects could easily be life-altering and fatal. With many cleaning products containing acidic substances, this could easily happen and has happened in the past. Bleach was often used as a primary disinfectant, however, there are now many safer greener disinfectant alternatives, a simple one being vinegar.

Phosphates are not directly harmful per say to the human population and will not cause specific issues in building occupants. Phosphates used in detergents and dishwashing products go directly into the aquatic environment. They are not commonly removed through wastewater treatment. They provide a limiting nutrient to algae in the impact water bodies causing algal blooms to grow exponentially year after year. Blooms can then produce toxins which are concentrated by organisms such as oysters and mussels. If humans or animals higher on the food chain consume these contaminated products they can suffer from one of many types of poisoning depending on the specific toxin produced. One of which is paralytic shellfish poisoning, if not treated in time will result in death. It is in our best interest to eliminate the use of phosphate containing detergents, as the foaming aspect does not contribute to the actual efficacy of the product. A green alternative would be phosphate free personal care products, clothing detergent, and dishwashing detergents, all of which are readily available.

Overall, a green approach is not difficult to implement and is in our best interest as service providers.

There are many benefits to utilizing a green cleaning program for both janitorial companies and their customers. First is the health and well being of the building occupants and janitorial staff. With green chemicals, it will reduce the possible exposure to toxic and volatile chemicals. Examples of this can include offgasing, dust, and chemical allergens that cause asthma or other factors that affect the indoor air quality of a facility.

Another benefit to implementing a green cleaning program is its sustainability. Many companies today take pride in their ability to "go green" and promote themselves as sustainability organizations. With green cleaning chemicals and procedures, it will lower the environmental impact and the facilities affect on the environment. Among many of the awards for going green or sustainable is the notorious LEED or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification which is important to many facility managers to cut costs and increase prestige.
