Bloodborne Pathogen Guidelines

10 Mar 2024 11:23 AM | Ashley Hale

OSHA  bloodborne pathogens standards are regulations that are designed to protect workers who may come into contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials in the workplace. These standards are in place to prevent the transmission of bloodborne diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.

The OSHA bloodborne pathogens standard requires employers to develop an exposure control plan that outlines procedures and practices to minimize the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens. This plan should include measures such as providing personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves and face shields, offering hepatitis B vaccinations to at-risk employees, and implementing safe work practices such as thoroughly washing hands after exposure, disinfecting equipment used for clean up and safely exposing gloves and/or other protective equipment after clean up to reduce the risk of exposure.

Employers are also required to provide training to employees who may be at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens. This training should cover topics like the risks associated with bloodborne pathogens, how to prevent exposure, and how to respond in the event of an exposure incident.
