A DIA official told the council Tuesday that after this and other previous bids have drawn protests, the airport plans to seek an outside review of its bid process and rules with an eye on increasing transparency and efficiency. Some protests have centered on DIA’s lengthy final negotiations with winning bidders, leaving losing companies in the dark for months about the outcome.
“I understand that we don’t win every bid. Nor do we expect to,” said Scott Murray of Triangle Services, which was among the bidders not selected for the janitorial contract, during a public comment session Tuesday. “What we do expect is a transparent process that is fair to all the bidders.”

The study found that women responsible for cleaning at home or professionally suffered a more rapid decline than women who were not responsible for cleaning. The same trend was not observed in men, however. The authors did not offer a reason for this gender difference, though there were fewer men than women in the study and a smaller percentage of those men engaged in “occupational cleaning.”

Questions are emerging about the performance of a city contractor that has provided Denver airport janitorial services for decades, just as it’s set to win a $115 million contract.
City Councilman Kevin Flynn, who received a copy of the protest letter filed by a losing bidder last week, on Monday night triggered a one-week delay in the council’s consideration of the maximum five-year contract with ISS Facility Services. Council rules allow any council member to initiate a one-time delay of a contract, and ISS’s deal will be back at the council for a vote Feb. 20.
Deaths from influenza and pneumonia, which are closely tied to each other in the winter months, were responsible for 1 of every 10 deaths last week, and that’s likely to rise, Schuchat said in a conference call Friday.
There were 40,414 deaths in the U.S. during the third week of 2018, the most recent data available, and 4,064 were from pneumonia or influenza, according to the CDC data. The number for that week is expected to rise more reports are sent to the agency.

Janitors working for the city of Waco, Texas will keep their jobs despite the city outsourcing to a private organization.
The City Council approved a compromise plan in a 6-0 vote that will phase out city workers in favor of private contractors, but current city janitors will retain their positions at 16 buildings.
In late February, UBM Enterprise will start providing janitorial services at 14 buildings, covering about 400,000 square feet.
Eventually, the city plans to transition all janitorial services to the private firm. The move will save the city about $420,000 on its yearly $1 million cleaning bill.

Benjamin Franklin and Pauli Murray colleges last semester began using cleaning solutions produced by Orbio Technologies, which manufactures greener alternatives to conventional cleaning products.
Orbio sells machines that use electrolysis to convert water and salt into diluted sodium hydroxide and hypochlorous acid — which can be used as a general multisurface cleaner and disinfectant, respectively. Murray and Benjamin Franklin are the first residential colleges to buy machines for on-site generation of those cleaning solutions. One Orbio unit, located in the Murray basement, will service both colleges.

This year’s flu season has been devastating for children across the country. And several schools have closed their doors in efforts to fight the illness.
Schools in at least a dozen states have cancelled classes for days at a time after staff and students became sick, CBS News reports. Officials at Bishop Lynch High School, in Dallas, Texas, shut the school down for days so crews could disinfect the property.
“This year it really is unprecedented,” school nurse Patty Barton told CBS of the illness. “I probably saw about 30 kids here on Monday and sent 10 home.”
