A janitor was assaulted in a bathroom at Chelsea Piers on Sept. 11, according to police.

A janitor was assaulted in a bathroom at Chelsea Piers on Sept. 11, according to police.

CHELSEA — A man using the bathroom at Chelsea Piers repeatedly whacked a janitor on the head with a plunger and punched him after the janitor accidentally bumped him with his mop, police said.

The 63-year-old janitor, who was cleaning the public bathroom on the north side of the building, was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital and had a bloody left ear and bruises and swelling on the left side of his face, according to police and workers there.

Soon after the incident that took place on Sept. 11 just after 9 a.m., police arrested Billy Thomas, 46, and charged him with assault.

Custodians took home an average pay of $109,467 in the 2013-14 school year — and 634 of the city’s 799 custodians earned more than $100,000 in salary and overtime during that time, city payroll records show.

That’s because of the city’s 1,500 school buildings, 238 have no full-time custodian on site, up 74 percent from the 137 empty slots in 2012, according to data from the custodians union.

The arrangement is forcing nearly one-third of the city’s 737 custodians to cover two schools — and reap additional pay.

So why not hire more janitors and avoid the double pay for overtime?  Maybe it has something to do with all the perks, including retirement arrangements, that don’t seem to figure into the average pay reported above.

    Additional Company Information
We Mean to Klean was founded in late 2012, while I was pursuing my bachelor's in Business Management. Started as a way to supplement my income, it was my hope that by providing a quality, detailed cleaning service, I might provide enough supplemental income to contribute towards the grocery bill for my family of five. I had little expectations beyond that. However, I soon learned that my previous training and experience within the Quality and Process Engineering field provided me an opportunity to formulate a, "niche" market. I have always promoted the ideaology that the only way of providing a service or manufacturing a product is by doing it, "right the first time." Further, it certainly was not MY job to define what the customer's service needs were and that by mandating that prospective clients choose packages that were not tailored to their unique needs, I was not meeting their unique needs or providing excellent customer service. While there is certainly no shortage of competition within the cleaning field, very few companies I have worked for are what I would consider, "consumer driven." As I worked a little longer, it became apparent that my detailed nature was most appreciated outside of general maintenance cleanings that a lot of the competition was offering so, along with other companies that shared my business ethics, I aligned myself with cleaning providers whom would handle the routine maintenance cleanings after my staff and I performed the detail, "museum type" standard cleanings that I have become known to provide. Coupled with some of the best and experienced professionals within the cleaning industry, we have nine total certified cleaning professional capable of providing a wide array of cleaning services to the highest caliper of quality possible. We boast an A+ BBB rating and are members of ARCSI and many other professional industry leading organizations. Our customers are composed of both residential and commercial clients and the greatest number of our clients are either real estate companies looking to provide available homes to, "visually appealing market ready appearance" or new homeowners who appreciate the highly detailed cleaning services we offer. We are a cleaning provider that truly values our reputation above anything else and it is apparent considering our company has quickly become a household name in the community we happily service!

CUPE Local 1001 president Jeff Martin says no current union members will lose their jobs with this move, but he says 12 of his members will be redeployed and some positions will eventually be lost through attrition.

The University of Windsor is contracting out janitorial duties at six of its buildings, says the union that represents the hourly employees who do the work.

The change takes effect next Monday, CUPE Local 1001 says.

John Coleman, the school's director of public affairs and communications told CBC he would respond to a request for a statement later Wednesday.

The union says the move affects work at Dillon Hall, Clark Residence, Alumni Hall, as well as the Toldo GLIER and ELIP buildings.

Jeff Martin, president of CUPE Local 1001, says he is "pissed off to no end."

He said the university's decision is the continuation of a troubling trend.

"It's been going on for years, and we've been talking about it for years. It's just nothing seems to happen. It just stays the same, and we lose jobs, lose jobs, lose jobs. You get mad. Your hands are kind of tied," he said.

Martin says no current union members will lose their jobs with this move, but he says 12 of his members will be redeployed and some positions will eventually be lost through attrition.

There are currently 68 employees in housekeeping at the university, according to Martin.

"They're going to completely get rid of us. That's just the way it is. They're going to get rid of us," Martin said.

PRNewswire/ -- US demand to grow 2.2% annually through 2019

US demand for janitorial equipment and supplies is forecast to grow 2.2 percent per year through 2019 to $7.1 billion, continuing the recovery that began in the latter part of the 2009-2014 period. Significant pent-up demand in automated floor cleaning equipment will fortify advances. After initially falling in 2008 and 2009, sales of most types of automated floor cleaning equipment remained below pre-recession highs as of 2014, but will again approach or exceed those levels by 2019.

Gains will be spurred by accelerating economic growth, which will increase foot traffic and a need for additional cleaning in buildings, as well as factors such as a rising number of business establishments and gains in nonresidential floor space that boost the potential market for janitorial products. Increased demand for nonessential cleaning activity and related products will also promote advances. Heightened interest in sustainable cleaning practices will buoy demand for higher value products that decrease or eliminate water or chemical consumption.

Sales will be further fueled by growing interest in replacing older, noisy equipment with quieter, more discreet products appropriate for noise-sensitive environments. In addition, concerns about the risk of cross-contamination and employee injury will drive sales of products with advanced features and improved ergonomic design. More rapid gains will be restrained by market maturity in manual cleaning products and bags and containers, as well as by competition from lower-cost imports.
