SEBRING — The Highlands County School District is saving money by outsourcing custodian services, but the school board has scheduled a workshop to study supply shortages at the schools and to discuss keeping the schools’ plant operator on the district payroll.
School Board Vice Chair Donna Howerton said the board was informed at Tuesday’s school board meeting that schools have been running short of custodial supplies such as paper towels and cleaning materials.
Schools are supposed to have up to three weeks of supplies on hand, she said. The schools say they are ordering the supplies, but they don’t have a three-week supply on their premises.
The school district contracts with GCA, which Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations Mike Averyt is a professional cleaning company with standardized procedures, supplies and training.

Employees of the company providing janitorial services for most of Stafford County’s schools plan to continue striking today.
About 50 first showed up at 7 a.m. Monday to wave signs outside GCA Services Group’s office in the Stafford County Public Schools Facilities Operations and Maintenance Facility at 25 Wyatt Lane in Stafford.
The signs bore such slogans as “We care about our schools. But GCA doesn’t care about us.” “We like our job. We hate our pay.” And “Strike! Strike! Strike!”
The employees, many of whom have worked for GCA as long as seven years, said they’ve never gotten a raise to their $8-an-hour salary. That’s 75 cents above minimum wage in Virginia.
“They told a lot of us that after three weeks we’d get a raise, but that never happened,” said Clayton Howard, who has worked for GCA for three years. “A lot of folks here work side jobs [to make ends meet]. I cut grass.”

Frustrated with cleaning your house from top to bottom and feeling like it still isn't sparkling? You may have fallen victim to some cleaning myths.
We asked home cleaning expert Jan M. Dougherty, author of "The Lost Art of Housecleaning," to bust five common cleaning myths, so you can stop wasting time and start cleaning right.
Myth #1: Something will smell "clean" when it is clean.
Reality: What does "clean" smell like exactly? Nothing, Daugherty says.
"The simple truth of the matter is, when something is clean, it doesn't smell, period," she says. "It doesn't have an odor because when most things smell, you're smelling dirt, you're smelling grease or you're smelling cleaning products with perfumes and other fragrance."
Myth #2: Bleach is the ultimate cleaner.
Reality: Not only has home use of bleach been linked to an increased risk of infection in kids, but bleach isn't great for cleaning everything in your house.
"A lot of people think they should use bleach to disinfect, to clean the germs," Dougherty says, but she recommends using 100-percent white vinegar instead. "It's not caustic and it will not damage anything — not your clothes, your hands or anything it gets near."
One of the biggest myths about bleach is that it is the best way to clean grout between tiles. Not so, Daugherty says. "It is the worst thing you can do because bleach will eat the grout," she warns. Instead, she recommends spraying your grout with Krud Kutter and scrubbing it with a toothbrush or small detail brush. "It will come up absolutely clean," she says.

One of the major benefits of a Green Cleaning Program in LTC Cleaning Services is that it assists in minimizing the environmental and health concerns associated with conventional cleaning practices. Cleaning products can contribute to indoor air quality problems as compounds evaporate and are circulated through the building ventilation system. Cleaning products can also leave residues that cause skin and eye irritation, can be absorbed through the skin to affect health, accidently ingested to cause poisoning and inadvertently mixed to cause fatal gases.
A successful Green Cleaning Program not only consists of the right products but also the correct equipment to include vacuums cleansers with high filtration filter systems, floor machines with dust control systems to capture impurities that cause pollution to the indoor air quality, and microfiber cleaning cloths and mops. Training on safety and new cleaning procedures to encourage understanding and team by in are essential for a successful Green Cleaning Program.
