Commercial cleansers, which contain 25 to 30 percent ammonia are extremely dangerous because they are highly corrosive. Higher concentrations of ammonia may cause corrosive injury including skin burns, permanent eye damage or even blindness. It can also cause immediate burning of the throat and respirator tract.

sodium hydroxide can burn and eat away at any part of the body that it contacts. Breathing sodium hydroxide dust or mist causes mild or serious effects, depending on the amount of exposure. Effects may include sneezing, sore throat or runny nose.

Triclosan is a known endocrine disruptor  and a suspected carcinogen. There is a good reason to believe that the over use of products with triclosan has contributed to bacterial resistance in the same way we are cautioned against the use of antibiotics. The persistent nature that is connected to the use of triclosan being washed down our drains daily and effecting water life.

In order to change ammonia into a green cleaning product that is safe for home and commercial use combine 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon liquid soap or detergent, and 2 cups of water is a spray bottle. This makes the best green window cleaner. Shake to blend and spray.

Sodium hydroxide is usually used as a scrubbing agent. You can get the same cleaning cleaning and scrubbing power from baking soda and water that will make this into a safe green cleaning product. Mix a little baking soda with water until you have a thick paste. This mixture will clean even the toughest greasiest job.

The green alternative for Triclosan is vinegar. Most types of vinegar are great for killing surface bacteria. When diluted in water vinegar is gentle enough to use on most furniture and even may be used topically on the skin if desired. Most find the smell to be unpleasant. For this reason it is often recommended to not only dilute with distilled or purified water but also to add some fragrant essential oils.

Many people debate about going green.  How clean is it really getting everything?  But in all actuality you're getting the same effect without the toxins.  Many don't know that there's no federal regulation of chemicals in household products.  Rebecca Sutton, Senior Scientist at the Environmental Working Group, explains, "In term of household cleaners, neither ingredient nor products must meet any sort of safety standard, nor is any testing data or notification required before bringing a product to market."

In the cleaning business we're exposed to this more than most.  For example, Perchloroethylene is used in spot removers and carpet and upholstery cleaning.  The EPA classifies this as a possible carcinogen.  Many older buildings have dry cleaning businesses in them, the people there are exposed gravely. They're exposed because PERC is found in many dry cleaning solutions.  A healthier choice would be to go to a wet cleaner.  Its a water based technology rather than chemical solvent.

Another common chemical we use in cleaning Sodium Hydroxide.  It is found in oven cleaners and drain openers.  it is extremely corrosive.  It can cause severe burns if it comes in contact with the skin.  And even cause a sore throat if inhaled.  A safer route would be to make a baking soda paste for the oven and for the drain you can use baking soda and vinegar.

Using these toxins aren't only harming us but its harming the world we live in.  The climate has changed so much in the last 30-40 years.  A big debate now is about global warming.  Global warming is primarily a problem of too much Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere.  A lot of spray cleaning products gives off CO2.

Even though you see a company say they're "Green".  They may not be.  This is known as greenwashing.  Greenwashing is when a company spends more time and money on marketing a green campaign rather than having business practices in place that helps the environment.

As you can see there are many effects using our everyday products have on us and the environment.  We have to do a better job!  What will our great-grands have to deal with as far as the environment and new diseases.  Going green is the only WAY!

I'm a huge fan of the Green Works products.  You get the same amazing clean that you can with regular harsh products.  It doesn't affect my asthma, so when I saw they had a toilet bowl cleaner, I was sold.  Another good thing about the products by Green Work is that they're not hard to clean with.  I don't have to wear gloves or anything.  This product line will forever be under my cabinet.
