The case against having your ducts cleaned: Here’s the thing: Dust that settles in your ventilation ducts typically stays there unless disturbed, and is usually harmless. The official advisory of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency concludes: “Duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems. Neither do studies conclusively demonstrate that particle ... levels in homes increase because of dirty air ducts.

This is because much of the dirt in air ducts adheres to duct surfaces and does not necessarily enter the living space. ... Moreover, there is no evidence that a light amount of household dust or other particulate matter in air ducts poses any risk to your health.

    TOLEDO, Ohio — Holy Toledo!

A family cleaning the Toledo, Ohio-area home of a relative who recently died stumbled across a live hand grenade from the World War II era.

    Not Released (NR)

Toledo authorities say such finds are becoming more common.

A police spokesman says the bomb squad retrieves old military munitions about once a month.

But he says too often people who discover old grenades or a mortar shell will haul it to the police station.

Police say the best thing to do is call 911.

Janitors who work in Kansas City Public Schools have voted to join a union.

The union vote came earlier this month, when 90 custodians elected to join the Service Employees International Union Local 1, which represents more than 300 workers in the district.

Janitors in Kansas City Public Schools have voted to join a union after the district awarded its custodial services contract to a new company.

The custodians work for the Marcis & Associates janitorial services firm, which earlier this year won a $10 million, three-year contract with the school.

Union members had supported the district’s decision to give the contract to a new company, saying the previous firm did not recognize union workers and that schools had seen a decline in cleanliness amid understaffing.

Newark- The janitorial company that cleans Newark City Hall and 43 other city buildings announced Wednesday layoffs for 41 employees amid an ongoing dispute with the city over its cleaning services contract.

United Services, Inc., which sued the city in July over what it called an unfair bidding process meant to push the company out, said all laid off employees are Newark residents.

Though the company has continued to clean city buildings, it alleges Newark has not paid for its services since June, prompting the layoffs.

It’s the season for giving — the cold and flu, that is.

Local health officials are offering advice and tips to those looking to stay healthy and away from the sneezing and coughing this holiday season.

The timing and severity of the flu, a contagious respiratory illness, can be unpredictable year-to-year. But it’s usually prevalent during the late stages of fall and winter months, according to health officials.

FILE - In this Sept. 16, 2014 file photo, a sign telling customers that they can get a flu shot in a Walgreen store is seen in Indianapolis. Kids may get more of a sting from flu vaccination this fall: Doctors are gearing up to give shots only, because U.S. health officials say the easy-to-use nasal spray version of the vaccine isn't working as well as a jab. Needle-phobic adults still have some less painful options. But FluMist, with its squirt into each nostril, was the only ouch-free alternative for children, and has accounted for about a third of pediatric flu vaccinations in recent years. (AP Photo/Darron Cummings, File)While the New York State Department of Health hasn’t deemed it severe flu season yet, Emelia Lindquist Harley, nursing director for UPMC Chautauqua WCA, said there have been reported cases. Lindquist said people of all ages should be getting the flu vaccine. Young children, the elderly, those with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women are among those highly recommended to get a yearly flu shot.

For 20 minutes, Fernando was threatened and forced to clean and mop the bathroom before he was allowed to leave the store, his wife claims in the suit.

The incident caused Fernando to be “humiliated, disgraced and injured in his feelings, emotionally and mentally,” the lawsuit says.

The emotional distress caused by the situation was so severe that it “resulted in the death of Fernando,” the suit says.

“In all my years in the court system, this is new to me, never seen it,” said WFTV legal analyst Belvin Perry.

Perry said the claim for false imprisonment is a compelling one, but proving it led to the man’s death, which the lawsuit alleges, could be a stretch.
