The danger of the mix

18 Oct 2026 1:08 PM | Tiffany Barnes

Cleaning and janitorial employees work with many different chemicals daily, making it extremely important to understand the hazards associated with each product. Mixing certain cleaning chemicals can create dangerous reactions that may cause serious injuries or even death. For example, mixing bleach with ammonia can produce toxic chloramine gases, while mixing bleach with acidic cleaners can release chlorine gas. Exposure to these gases can cause breathing difficulties, eye irritation, coughing, and severe lung damage. Employees should always read labels and understand SDS and follow proper storage and handling.

Proper chemical hazard training is essential for protecting cleaning employees, coworkers, and everyone who enters the facility. All janitorial staff should understand OSHA hazard communication standards, know how to identify chemical warning labels, and use the appropriate PPE, such as gloves and eye protection. Employees should also be trained on proper ventilation, chemical dilution, safe storage, and emergency procedures in case of exposure or spills. Employers are responsible for providing chemical hazard information and training to their employees. Understanding these dangers not only prevents  workplace accidents but also creates a safe work environment for everyone involved.
