Bloodborne pathogens are not a hospital problem. They are a cleaning problem. Any time a member of our crew empties a trash can, wipes down a restroom, services an Airbnb turnover, mops a gym floor, or handles a tenant turn after a vacate, they can encounter blood, bodily fluids, or hidden sharps. A discarded razor in a hotel bathroom, a needle pressed against the wall of a kitchen bag, a smear of blood on a doorknob from a small cut nobody told us about — these are the realities of the work. The three most commonly addressed bloodborne pathogens in OSHA's standard — Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV — can be transmitted by a single, careless, unprotected exposure, and the consequences last a lifetime. That is why bloodborne pathogen awareness is one of the most important pieces of training a cleaning company can provide.

When cleaning employees understand bloodborne pathogens, they make better decisions every single shift. They wear nitrile gloves before they touch a trash bag instead of after they have already grabbed it. They never compress garbage with their hands or feet, because they have been taught that sharps can sit hidden inside the bag. They use Universal Precautions — treating all blood and body fluids as if they are infectious, every single time, regardless of who the customer is. They follow safe handling and disposal procedures for sharps, use the right EPA-registered disinfectant for blood spills, and know not to eat, drink, smoke, or apply lip balm in any area where exposure is possible. Just as importantly, they know exactly what to do if an exposure does happen: flood the area with water, wash with soap, flush mucous membranes, report the incident to a supervisor immediately, and seek prompt medical evaluation under their employer's post-exposure management plan. Training turns panic into procedure. Finally, knowing this material is not optional — it is a baseline of professionalism and a legal expectation. OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard requires employers with employees who have reasonably anticipated occupational exposure to provide a written Exposure Control Plan, offer the Hepatitis B vaccine at no cost, supply PPE, and deliver annual training during paid working hours. A cleaning company that takes this seriously protects its team members, protects its customers and their families, protects the company itself from devastating liability, and earns the trust that comes with a credential like IJCSA Bloodborne Pathogens Certification. Cleaning is a respected, skilled trade. Bloodborne pathogen training is one of the clearest ways our industry shows the world that we take that responsibility, and the safety of the people doing this work, seriously.

In the janitorial and cleaning industry, a sparkling floor or a streak-free window is only half of the work. The other half — the half that builds loyal clients, glowing referrals, and a lasting reputation — is great customer service. Great customer service in this trade begins long before the first spray of disinfectant. It starts with listening: hearing what a client actually needs in their home or facility, understanding the rhythms of their family or staff, and respecting that we are guests in spaces people trust us to enter. It continues with clear communication — confirming appointments, arriving on time in uniform, walking through expectations, and following up after the job is done to make sure every detail met the mark. And it never tolerates the small dismissals that plague this industry: the missed corner, the rushed bathroom, the "good enough" attitude. A true cleaning professional treats every baseboard, every doorknob, and every conversation as a chance to earn the client's trust all over again.

That is exactly the standard that members of the International Janitorial Cleaning Services Association (IJCSA) commit to every day. IJCSA-certified companies are trained not just in proper chemistry, infection control, and green cleaning techniques, but in the customer service principles that turn a one-time job into a lifelong client relationship. When you hire an IJCSA member, you are hiring a business that has chosen to be held accountable to a national standard of professionalism — one that values honesty in pricing, reliability in scheduling, courtesy in every interaction, and integrity in every result. Whether the need is a residential deep clean, a recurring office service, a post-construction turnover, or a specialized disinfection job, IJCSA members bring the technical skill and the human touch that elevate cleaning from a chore into a craft. So the next time you search for a cleaning company you can actually count on, look for the IJCSA badge. It is more than a credential — it is a promise that the people walking through your door care about your space, your time, and your peace of mind as much as you do.

Imagine you're removing trash bags from bins at your cleaning job, press down to compress the bag and "BOOM", you've been stabbed by a contaminated needle and have now been exposed too bloodborne pathogens.

Realistically, you never know what infectious disease the person you're assisting may unknowingly carry. Its best to always be protected, and that protection starts with how employees assess and reset contaminated areas. It is dire to follow OSHA guidelines to reduce exposure. In the event you are exposed, there are precautions necessary to take.

The first issue with our scenerio is that you pressed down on the trash bag. Its an extremely optional action that can risk exposure. Another issue is that there were needles in trash bins. Contaminated items should be properly disposed of every single time. We are supposed to treat every bodily fluid as if its contaminated, per the "Universal Precaution Approach". That includes using proper PPE, no hand-mouth contact/smoking around contaminated areas, and following all other OSHA guidelines.

Things happen, and sometimes you get exposed. First step; call your supervisor and PCP. Afterwards, watch for symptoms. Some symptoms may include, fatigue, pain, fever, swollen lymph nodes, jaundice, diarrhea, dark urine, light colored stool, constant fever/rash with no apparent cause. Examples of bloodborne pathogens include Hep-B(HBV) and HIV/AIDS. Although that doesn't conclude our list of symptoms or diseases, I'm sure you're now aware of the importance of cleaning employees knowledge of bloodborne pathogens and why following OSHA is simply to protect yourself and others.

Each and every job we come across has its own paths, cross- roads and even journeys. Its important, even vital for all staff to know what situation they may be getting into. Saying this, for every entrance you must always have an exit strategy. These are some of the essentials we must know as cleaners on the battlefront known as bloodborne pathogens.

Bloodborne Pathogens are microorganisms that are infectious in human blood or bodily fluids that can cause disease. Two of these diseases are HBV (Hepatitis B Virus) and HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) which is associated with AIDS. This is why it is so important for cleaning staff and employees be intrinsically safe when exposed to these types of environments. Exposed cuts, bites, needle pricks, saliva as well as through your mucus membranes are ways you can be inflicted by bloodborne pathogens. Proper training programs in your organization must be instilled in your employees and staff's best interest.

Without this training and knowledge your cleaning staff won't know the enemy they are fighting and the risk involved with this type of cleaning that not only effects them and the people around them, but they can also risk the lives of there loved ones at home. Having a ''Universal Precaution'' approach that was established by OSHA is a key component in training staff. What this means is to treat everything with caution and as if it is contagious such as blood, bodily fluids and always have on your PPE. When dealing with laundry or trash always be aware of the unseen that may be present such as needles or things that may potentially cut you and lead to infections. If the unfortunate happens and you get cut in that environment, always remember to contact your supervisor and deal with the situation immediately.

In closing, remember to keep it simple.

After and during any disinfecting always be cautious of your surroundings at all times.

Always wash hands thoroughly after taking of gloves and other PPE.

You are the most powerful weapon in the prevention of Bloodborne Pathogens.

First in order to understand why it’s important to know about handling bloodborne pathogens, it’s a good idea to understand the potential dangers.  So what exactly are Bloodborne pathogens?  Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms in the human blood that can cause disease in humans. OSHA defines blood to mean human blood, human blood components, and products made from human blood. [1]

Now that we know what bloodborne pathogens are, why is it important to have knowledge of handling them? The CDC estimates that 5.6 million workers in the health care industry and related occupations are at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and other diseases. [2]. You and your colleagues are likely included in that number and are working in an industry where exposure and potential risks of infections are very high and possibly life changing. In order to reduce these risk, a significant and comprehensive focus on educating yourself and knowing what it is you may be exposed to and how to prevent injury, infection, and possibly death must take place.

Not only does knowing about bloodborne pathogens help reduce risk related to exposure, infection, and death, it also helps foster better decision making and efficiency on the job at handling scenarios that arise. This gives employees the confidence needed to handle such task and puts customers at ease in knowing they have hired someone that is properly training and can get the job done correctly. It is not only important for employees and companies to know about blood-borne pathogens it is of upmost urgency and at great consequence that they educate themselves on this topic when working in these types of environments.

The Importance of Educating Cleaning Staff About Bloodborne Pathogens

As a new business owner in the professional cleaning industry, ensuring the safety and well-being of employees and clients is a top priority. One critical area often overlooked is the knowledge and training surrounding bloodborne pathogens. These are infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause diseases such as Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). For cleaning staff, who may come into contact with blood or bodily fluids during their duties, understanding the risks and proper protocols is essential not only for their health but also for maintaining a safe work environment.

Providing comprehensive training on bloodborne pathogens equips employees with the tools to handle potentially hazardous situations safely and effectively. This includes recognizing exposure risks, using personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly, and following proper cleanup and disposal procedures. By educating staff on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and best practices, we not only comply with legal requirements but also foster a culture of responsibility and professionalism within our company. Employees who feel confident in their knowledge and skills are more likely to perform their jobs effectively, reducing the risk of accidental exposure or contamination.

For our clients, hiring a cleaning company that prioritizes safety and hygiene sends a strong message of care and professionalism. When staff are trained to handle bloodborne pathogens, they can manage unexpected situations, like minor injuries or medical emergencies, with competence and care. This not only enhances the reputation of our cleaning business but also builds trust with clients who value health and safety. As a new owner, investing in this training early sets the foundation for a successful, ethical, and safety-conscious company that stands out in the industry.
