In recent months we have all been affected by the worldwide pandemic. This has forced us to look at how we do otherwise normal things in our day to day lives. From wearing masks to protect too carrying around hand sanitizers, we have all had to make a conscious effort to protect ourselves and others from this devastating virus.

We have always cleaned our homes and offices. But now we are looking at what we are cleaning with and for most people doing it more often. Using appropriate disinfecting cleaners is more important than ever. Thinking about the surfaces that are touched and weather you have transferred the virus to your home is in the front of your thoughts. Disinfecting the high touch surfaces in my home has become almost a daily routine.

Either when you are cleaning at home or at the office change is a must. At least in the foreseeable future. Medical cleaners that you would rarely see outside of a Hospital or Doctors office are making there way into the mainstream marketplace. Disinfecting surfaces such as tables, door handles and menus after each patron is a must. A policy of not passing the same pen from customer to customer without being disinfected should be implemented. These are just some examples of small things that could make a big difference.

Training in the prevention of cross contamination should be given at all workplaces. This not only protects the patrons of the establishment but the employees. Keeping a healthy workforce and community is everyone’s responsibility. A little can go a long way.

Janitors and Janitorial staff are essential in our daily lives. No matter where you go you are in need of a janitorial staff to maintain the areas around you. In today’s time, with Covid 19, janitorial are an important key in keeping everything clean and helping to prevent the spread of the virus.

Commercial buildings are one of the things that need regular cleaning with people going into work every day and expending 8 hours of the day inside the janitorial service is needed. Sanitizing the high touch areas is crucial in keeping everyone healthy. Schools are another essential building were janitors are essential. With kids going back to in person classes cleaning after each class is necessary to disinfect in a daily bases.

Also, janitors help us keep our building free of trash and dust, and this is important for people with health issues. Dust particles can cause a person with asthma to have an asthma attack.          The whole world came to a standstill over the past 6 months and everyone quarantined themselves inside their homes. They became more aware of the quality of the air they are breathing every day. The awareness of virus, bacteria and mVOCs in the air has caused an almost mass panic throughout the country. Individuals that were never considered a "Germaphobe" are now scared to shake hands or touch hand rails and door knobs. These new "Germaphobes" are now seriously looking at the indoor air quality and the effects it may have on their overall health and immune system.

Including mold inspection and remediation as well as virus disinfection services to my business is allowing my clients to sleep well knowing their indoor environment is healthy. We educate our clients about the relationship between mold and moisture and how mold spores spread through the air. Addressing the moisture issues, removing the infected material then cleaning and treating the area ensures the best indoor enviroment possible. The hospital grade disinfectant that we use, VitalOxide, kills 99.999% of all virus, bacteria and MOLD. Employing eletrostatic sprayers and fogging equipment ensures a complete application to areas that are normally neglected by manual cleaning.

There a numerous ways to implement proper medical cleaning practices in residential and public commercial spaces.  As stated in the Janitorial Service Directory there are a multitude of companies who provide janitorial services to the public.  It is the duty of these companies to disinfect residential and commercial spaces, and subsequently protect the public from harmful viruses and germs.

Individuals involved in residential and commercial cleaning can also inform the public of hazards from chemicals they might come in contact with at home or at the workplace. Helping the public follow OSHA hazard communication standards will inform people of how to interact with everyday chemicals they use at home or to disinfect at work.

Most people won't be familiar with safety documents such as MSDS's and the proper methods of dealing with chemicals.  People involved with janitorial services can bring this knowledge to the everyday public.  This knowledge and these practices are not only necessary for those in residential and commercial cleaning, but clearly useful to the public to limit the spread of viruses and diseases.

Also, medical cleaning practices such as proper hand washing and keeping personal items away from possibly contaminated surfaces are practices that can only help the public.  Furthermore, knowledge of how easily contaminants such as bloodborne pathogens can spread is useful knowledge for anyone to learn. Helping people implement these practices are just more ways to keep the public safer by implementing medical cleaning practices.

It is very important for cleaning employees and staff to know about bloodborne pathogens because anyone exposed to them are at risk for serious or life-threatening illnesses like : HIV and Aids , HBV or Hepatitis B Virus. And Employer responsability to follow the OSHA exposure Control Plan and observe Universal Precautions. Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms present in blood that can cause disease in humans.

All employers whose employees will be at risk of exposure ( blood, body fluid, laundry) are required to provide OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens training for their staff. Especially to know how to protect their selves against sharps & hazardous waste, needles or others contaminated objects . They must know how to protect themselves by learning about PPE ( Personal Protective Equipment ) and to make a report immediately to their employers after potential exposure for follow up relative at the situation.

The proper cleaning of healthcare facilities is extremely important to protect the patient's, staff, vendors and visitors to the facility. Without proper cleaning and cross contamination techniques, viruses can be transferred from room to room, patient to patient and so on.

Cleaning helps to prevent patient infection which is all to common. Statistically, 1 out of 20 patients will fall victim to an HAI (Healthcare Associated Infection) This is far to common and could have life changing effects to the patient. Patients are in a vulnerable state at these facilities and more susceptible to infection. An infection could be life threatening, extend there stay at the facility or at the very least delay there recovery time.

Infections and viruses can also be taken home with visitors and staff exposing family and friends. Hepatitis, MSRA and many other infectious diseases can live outside the body for extended periods of time. These can be transferred from the facility to the new host on shoes, clothing, keys, phones and various other objects we commonly use in our lives. Proper training, cleaning techniques and the appropriate level of PPE should be used by all workplace staff.

I am the custodian for a mid-sized church that uses buildings with long histories of mold problems. Situated on a hillside in south central Texas, our buildings are subject to rainwater runoff flowing under vestibule doors and soaking crawl spaces. The main building is built on a slab; the other three are portables. A stone skirting built around one of the portables has created extensive moisture retention, resulting in ongoing mold, pest and other contamination problems. The HVAC systems in all of the buildings are inadequate to create the consistent air flow and humidity control necessary to discourage mold growth in our hot, humid climate.

In an effort to improve and maintain healthy indoor air quality, our Facilities Manager has removed large sections of stone skirting; utilized wet vacs, fans, dehumidifiers and air purifiers; remediated for termites; rebuilt rotted floors; remediated for condensation; and established a regular routine of cleaning, changing filters, maintaining equipment and responding to occupants’ input. Now armed with IJCSA training, we can implement a comprehensive mold cleaning program, stop the further deterioration of our facilities by mold and consistently provide healthy air in which to work and worship.
