Bloodborne pathogens are of great concern when it comes to maintaining a clean work environment. There are protocols and procedures that need to be used every time an incident occurs. It is not a simple matter of wiping down a countertop or floor. It is vital for you, your employees, and the employees who work in that environment to be kept as safe as possible.

Employees need to be aware and take precautions to avoid contaminating themselves as well as others around them. This includes training them on how to properly clean, transport, and disinfect after any possible encounters with these pathogens. Proper training should be given to each employee on how to clean using the proper tools and disinfectants. Gloves should always be worn when dealing with anything related to biohazard materials to ensure that our employees stay safe as well as our customers.

Since pathogens are not visible to the human eye, every job should be treated as though they were present. We must aim to do our best the first time in order to maintain a clean and safe atmosphere for our customers to work in.

It is in my company's motto to implement a greener way of cleaning both homes and offices.

I have purchased products that promote a healthier way of cleaning such as by using e-cloths in our cleaning routines and using botanical cleaners in effectively cleaning such surfaces as kitchen counters, bathroom showers, floors and around the house and or office. It was important to me as a company to offer this type of cleaning because it is not only beneficial to the client but to the cleaner also in that they are working with these products on a daily basis.

I hope to promote a better way of cleaning with my company by offering my clients less chemicals yet a better clean.

The best defense if a great offense, always treat every situation as a possible blood borne pathogen’s outbreak to ensure you are protected. You may ask yourself what exactly is a blood-borne pathogen? Well let me tell you a blood-borne pathogen is a transmittable disease carried through our blood and is highly contagious, an example would be HIV or Hepatitis. You do not necessarily have to be aware that you are coming in contact with a blood-borne pathogen to become infected. You can simply pick this up anywhere where blood could have been shed or other bodily fluids such as hospital floors, a sharps container or perhaps just an edge of something that cut someone else prior to you. A blood-borne pathogen is something we cannot see with our naked eye so it is even more important to fight against it proactively. Knowledge is power. Power is knowing.

It's extremely important for any business, cleaning or janitorial company to be aware of proper OSHA safety protocol to protect themselves and your employees from possible occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. This can occur in the simplest of settings by being nicked with something sharp and dirty, these things are never intended but they can and do happen. As an employer it is our responsibility to protect our staff members and advise them of potential hazards. At She Can Clean, LLC we provide our staff with personal protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, face masks and personal protective clothing when necessary.  We also encourage our staff to treat all activities as a possible bloodborne pathogen to ensure safety and protection from accidents at all times for our company, staff and clientele.

At She Can Clean we take pride not only in providing a high quality service but in knowing we care for the properties we maintain , our clientele and our staff. What better way to show those you care by promoting a healthy and safe environment and ensuring your staff and clientele are always safe from unwanted and negligent cross contamination of blood borne pathogens.

There’s a danger in the workplace that’s not even visible to the naked eye, yet it could change your life forever if you’re exposed to it.  There are trainings set to give you necessary information you need to protect yourself against exposure to these harmful microorganisms, and to know what to do in the event that exposure occurs. Bloodborne pathogens are bacteria and viruses that live in blood and other body fluids. These pathogens can cause devastating diseases like hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) diseases that can make you very sick and even be lethal. If these fluids are contaminated and they touch your eyes, mouth or nose, or an open wound of any kind even something as small as a hangnail or a paper cut bloodborne pathogens can enter your system.

Treat every situation as through the person is a bloodborne pathogen carrier, no matter how well you know him or her, no matter how remotely the person fits the idea you have of someone who may be infected. Universal precautions are very important and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Cover any opening in the skin with a dry bandage. Wearing gloves for any anticipated contact with body fluids. If you wear gloves and you stick yourself with a needle or damage the gloves, you still have some protection. Never intentionally pick up broken glass with bare hands or gloved hands. Use dust pan and broom Never push trash down into cans with hands.

In wrapping up there are certain precautions that job must adhere to:

n  Do not place hands into used sharps containers

n  Use a brush or tongs to place broken glass or other sharp items into a dust pan for disposal

n  Shearing, breaking, bending, re-capping of contaminated sharps is prohibited

n  Do not remove needle from used tube holder after phlebotomy

There are so many harmful effects when it comes to various cleaning products. It can be harmful on the environment as well as your health. We feel that cleaning products are  safe but that's not true alot of cleaning products are dangerously toxic. Cleaning product labels can be misleading alot of cleaners are labeled " Natural but are anything but, to protect yourself and your work environment is to avoid certain chemicals.

A company that uses hazardous chemicals are not concerned about your health, the environment and the effects that these chemicals can have. They are all about saving a dollar and finding a easy way out.

This is why I fee going green is the best way to go it benefits the planet and the community, it has a beneficial impact on the quality of water, energy use and the amount of pollution that is generated. Green products are low in allergens, they have biodegradable agents and they are good products made with natural ingredients and its the safety way to go.

For example a company that uses hazardous chemicals wilj use a chemical such as Butoxyenenthanol: A common ingredient in Kitchen, window and multipurpose cleaners that can interfere with the health of your red blood cells. Ammonia: which is found in glass and bathroom cleaners, it canbe very irritating to the eyes, skin, the throat and the lungs. Chlorine bleach; is a microbial and respiratory irritant. Bleach is a chemical found in mildew remover, and toilet bowl cleaners

Example of a company that uses green products are concern about your health they use products such as baking soda to make a all purpose cleaner for the kitchen and the bathroom. You can use baking soda and borax to make dish washing soap. Instead of using paper towels to wipe up a spill use a reusable cleaning cloth this cuts down on the landfill contribution with greener options for everyday paper products.

Going green is the best way to go it's safe and cost efficient and it boostsyour business moral with your client, staff and the community.

While much of the focus of bloodborne pathogen protection is focused on the healthcare industry, exposure can occur in many settings outside of health care facilities. Cleaning and maintenance staff should be properly trained in how to protect themselves and others from bloodborne pathogens as well, as should all janitorial services employees.

All body fluids and waste should be treated as though it contains pathogens, whether  or not you know the person the fluids are from. A few moments of prevention before cleaning up such waste should be a habit, not a hassle. Prevention should include disposable gloves, googles, face masks and proper OSHA approved cleaning products. All employees should know where these items are and how to properly use them.

When your staff is properly trained in bloodborne pathogen protection, they will create habits of safety that reduce their risk of exposure to pathogens even if they aren't routinely exposed to them. By helping your staff be fully trained in how to handle the potential of infection, you not only prevent their health from being at risk, but you also help ensure they cannot expose others. Proper employee training in bloodborne pathogen protection helps protect far more than your employee.
