You are required by law to provide all employees with training on being exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials OPIM if you work with or around bloodborne pathogens.

What are bloodborne pathogens you may ask. They are microorganisms that can be found in human blood and can cause diseases, including hepatitis B (HBV) hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Needle stick injuries are the most common but are not limited to just these. Other examples are if you ingest or allow a cut to come in contact with: bodily fluid. Vomit, Blood, Saliva, nasal discharge and tears. These fluids can be seen and readily accessible but some are hidden in garbage, sheets, pillows, etc. and employees must be trained in order to look out for the dangers they may face everyday at their jobs.

To protect employees OSHA has developed a Bloodborne pathogen standard and must be adhered to for the safety of all involved.

Employers must have a post exposure procedure in place at all times. This must be enacted within the first 24 hours and must include. Reporting, immediate flushing with water, Dr. examination, medication and follow up.

It is important to stay protected in an exposed environment that contains blood or bodily fluids. Bloodborne pathogens are pathogenic microorganisms that are located in the human body and can cause disease in humans. Cleaning services primary goal is to eliminate serious illnesses, follow universal health standards and minimized the risk of people catching diseases. Cleaning services are the key to all facilities when there is a need of keeping a sanitized and disinfectant area. Companies that always has a constant flow of people coming in and out every day are in a high need of a professional cleaning service. To prevent possible diseases in the human body, cleaning services must clean supplies and equipment after usage. This helps stop the spread of germs and diseases.

All cleanings services need a control plan that should be followed and updated annually. The control plan bring awareness to potential infectious/diseases that can occur and different symptoms to be cautious about. After cleaning in an infectious environment, cleaners must dispose gloves, thoroughly wash their hands and goggles. To prevent mistakes from happening in an infectious environment, some cleaners label and/or color code items for communication. Also, cleaners do not eat or drink in a contaminated area for safety reasons.

When cleaners are working, safety is extremely important because one mistake can cause someone their life. Disease such as HIV, HPV, forms Hepatitis does not have a cure for the disease but treatment to control it. For example, open cuts on the skin, and saliva can put someone at a high risk of an infectious disease. Employers are responsible to make sure that all employees are following the universal precautions and are up to date on cleaning procedures to minimize the risks of all people.

Our green cleaning program was implemented over an extended period to provide an opportunity to determine the best products for our clients. We then added the green products to our product line and discontinued use of harsh chemicals.

Staff was trained on the green cleaning method and once certification was received, we notified clients that the company was now green cleaning certified. We reached out to each customer, explaining the benefits of the switch over and the impact to their health and bottomline. Clients were pleased with the new product line and were excited our company was  moving in that direction. So come join us in our green cleaning adventure.

Chemicals are everywhere and in everything. The process of cleaning has always been associated with chemicals. The thought process has always been that in order for products, surfaces, etc to be clean they must have an application of chemicals.

An associated idea was that the stronger the chemical, the more effective the cleaning. These every day cleaning chemicals are in widespread use in every facet of society not only in the USA but throughout the world. Some chemicals have a negative respiratory and dermatological impact on people. These products are used with little emphasis on the ramifications of their use.

The result has been that our environment has been severely negatively impacted by the leaching of theses products into the water system, by depleting the ozone layer and impacting climate change. While the process is slow, the impact is irreversable. The glaciers have begun to melt, some animals have become extinct, allergies are on the increase and pollution is rampant.

The alternative to this desecration of our environment is to migrate to using green products for cleaning. These products are environmentally less harmful to humans and less chemically reactive. White vinegar, cornstarch and borax are all household items that can be used in cleaning without the detrimental impact on the environment.

Consumers can reduce their exposure to harmful chemicals by using eco friendly products, especially green cleaning products. In most cases these products are household items and are competitively priced. This can be a huge cost savings. It can improve productivity, and increase employee moral in the workplace. This adds value to people and helps to convey the idea that they are contributing to the health and safety of others.

As a citizen who is very concerned about our environment and focused on leaving a legacy, being green cleaning certified is very important to me. As I gain more knowledge of the molecular structure of chemicals, their impact on the human body and the environment, the more I am inclined to move away from that structure and migrate to green cleaning.

More importantly the damage to the environment is understated. Chemical runoff has reached the water table and is impacting our health. Harmful products are having a negative impact on the ozone layer. In order to secure our environment for future generations we need  a shift in mindset and a different modus operandi. We need to operate differently.

I have committed to change the way I think, use more green products and become green cleaning certified. Making this shift will allow me to make a contribution to my environment by moving away from the harsh chemicals and using green products as an alternative to traditional products. For example I can use green air freshening options and use green furniture polish. I can buy biodegradable products and participate in more recycling efforts.

These efforts though small, over time will impact the environment and help lower my carbon footprint. Overall this will help product a better world for my children and grandchildren and help to define my legacy. The green cleaning service directory (link included here) is a great resource for providers to be able to connect with other providers in the march towards being certified and working in that space.  Green Cleaning Service Directory.
