June 10--A Chicago firm has abruptly given up its $14.74 million janitorial contract at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, spurring Lambert to seek new bids for the three-year deal.
United Maintenance Co. withdrew June 2. A few days earlier, Lambert officials had begun inquiring about a news report that United was accused by a Chicago agency of reserving jobs based on political considerations in violation of its contract with that city.

CONTRACTOR banned from cleaning state government schools because it underpaid its workers has been replaced by four companies that are also subject to allegations of underpayment.
The Andrews government is under increasing pressure to overhaul the state’s school-cleaning system.
The Education Department has received complaints that one of the companies failed to pay penalty rates, and paid some workers flat rates of $21.22 to $23.54 an hour rather than the award minimum of $24.58 an hour.

How does Amazon plan to keep automated warehouses free of debris? With automated cleanup robots, of course.
At least that’s a scenario laid out in a patent granted to the Seattle-based online retailer today. There’s no guarantee the cleanup robots will become a reality. But it makes a weird sort of sense to have robots pick up after messy robots.
The application, filed more than two years ago, describes a reporting network that can be used by workers, robots or sensor-equipped monitoring stations to alert a central control system to the presence of an out-of-place object – for example, a box that’s fallen out of a bin, or a piece of trash that’s been left in the aisle.

A scam from a company claiming to operate out of Minneapolis is making its way across the nation and has even targeted a business in the Northwest. According to BBB reports, Waterford Management, a building management and janitorial services company, has already scammed multiple companies out of around $900,000 worth of supplies. Better Business Bureau Serving the Northwest advises all business owners to be cautious of solicitations from Waterford Management.
A janitorial supply business in Eugene, Oregon, reported Waterford Management set up an account with them and submitted all the appropriate credit application information and references required to make the order. Shortly afterward Waterford Management ordered another shipment, this time set up as a “blind” shipment to New York through a freight company.

A DISHWASHER is ideal for cleaning a range of items like toothbrushes and flip-flops, say experts.
The powerful sprays and heat not only wash off dirt but kill germs as they sterilise objects.
Grimy baseball caps, plastic toys and hairbrushes can also be loaded in for a deep-clean — but not at the same time as your crockery, pans and cutlery, advises the Good Housekeeping Institute.
Their guide says: “Most likely you aren’t using your dishwasher to its full potential.”

The public schools have gone green to get clean.
The School Department is converting to environmentally friendly cleaning products and shelving the chemically potent standard cleaners to improve air quality and end exposure to potentially toxic liquids and sprays, a press release said.
"We have chosen to make an investment in green cleaning products so that our staff and students will have a more asthma- and allergy-friendly learning environment," the press release said.
Asthma is a chronic illness that affects the respiratory tract and airways that carry oxygen in and out of the lungs. Asthma is more prevalent among Holyoke students in grades kindergarten to grade eight, with 27 percent reported to have asthma, than the statewide average for such students of 12.4 percent, according to the press release
