There are two main reasons as to why janitorial work and the people who do that for a living are just as important as any other working human being.

Firstly, janitors and custodians work to serve others. They do their job in order to meet the needs of others. This aspect of their job is the basis of every other job out there, regardless of products or services being sold. Every public facility, public restrooms, work offices, hospitals and hotels, and restaurants to name a few, need janitorial services. Without them, there would be a lot of disgusting buildings and mad people around. There is a need for this type of work just like any other, so why look down upon the people doing it for you.

Secondly, by performing janitorial services on a facility, a partnership is created between the service and the company they are cleaning for in order to serve the customers. The janitorial service is needed in order to keep customers or visitors happy. Take for instance a hospital. These doctors and nurses are giving high-quality care to patients. They rely on the cleanliness of their hospital to keep things sanitized and keeping patients feeling welcomed and not grossed out. Many people are coming in and out of hospitals so janitorial services are critical for their practice. Every time someone cleans for a company building, they are partnering with that specific company with is a great opportunity to keep both ends of the partnership valuable.

Don’t be sucked into the culture where these people are below you because they’re just as important as you. Not one person’s job is more important than another. Janitors and custodians deserve to be treated with respect and not looked down upon. If it weren’t for them, there would be a lot of places you visit that you would not return to. A job that serves people well is a meaningful one.

It is important for cleaning employees and staff be educated about bloodborne pathogens to keep themselves and others safe from possible infection.

Using the Universal Precautions approach is the best way to prevent infection from blood borne pathogens. Assume all blood and some other bodily fluids from all patients to be infectious. Be sure to use color coding or labeling on bags and containers when transporting contaminated materials. When cleaning blood or bodily fluids, take care to avoid splashing. After cleaning blood or bodily fluids, be sure to disinfect all equipment used. Wear the proper PPE, dispose of it correctly, and thoroughly wash your hands when you are finished.

If you think you have been exposed to any bloodborne pathogen you should clean the area with water, soap, and skin disinfectant if available. You should also notify your supervisor and physician immediately and refer to your companies exposure plan. OSHA requires all job sites that have a reasonable exposure to bloodborne pathogens have an exposure plan readily available and updated.

Two of the common bloodborne pathogens are Hepatitis B and HIV. If you have been infected with one of these pathogens, you may not start showing symptoms for years to come. Be aware of the signs and symptoms related to these infectious diseases.

Around 5.6 million healthcare workers are at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens every year. This number does not include members of the general public who are at risk of exposure, including janitors, but also any workers who interact with the public on a regular basis.

It is critical for cleaning and janitorial staff to be trained on the hazards of blood and bodily fluids, for several reasons. First, exposure to certain pathogens (such as HIV/AIDS, HBV, HCV, etc.) can cause potentially life-threatening illness, permanent disability, and even death. Secondly, treatment for these diseases can be extremely costly, particularly in the US. Furthermore, it is far easier to prevent exposure than it is to treat many diseases that can arise from exposure. Exposure can burden not only the one who was exposed, but also their friends and families.

Cleaning and janitorial staff should be well-versed in the prevention of bloodborne pathogen exposure. Training should include Universal Precautions and the proper use of PPE. Any worker who may potentially come into contact with blood and bodily fluids should know the risks and consequences as well as how to properly mitigate the risks.

Bloodborne pathogens contamination can and do occur at all work sites that we clean. Most are not as obvious as a medical facility.

With this in mind, following safe cleaning practices and not becoming complacent is necessary for the safety of our people and our clients.

Our people are unsung heroes on the front lines and in the trenches, fighting against contamination of all kinds, not just during our current pandemic.

The majority of homes have some form of carpeting or rugs. Carpets can harbor dirt, bacteria, mold, dust mites, and allergens. Cleaning carpets is an important part of cleaning homes and is a critical aspect for any company that offers cleaning services.

I intend to integrate carpet cleaning into my company by training employees on proper carpet cleaning techniques and care, and purchasing the needed equipment to be successful in carpet cleaning. Finally, ensuring customer satisfaction with our carpet cleaning services is the most important element of integrating carpet cleaning into my company.
