It is important for all cleaning professionals to learn about bloodborne pathogens for their own safety as well as others. Bloodborne pathogens are defined as harmful microorganisms in the blood. An individual coming in contact with them can result in contraction of infectious diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and many others.

To help safeguard employers and their employees it is important that all of them take a bloodborne pathogen certification course. Afterwards they will all be familiar with what universal precautions are, and ensure they are followed at all times. Employers be sure to provide a list and/or diagram of proper PPE for each individual cleaning situation, and ensure they keep an adequate supply in stock for their employees needs.

With proper knowledge and accountability in place on all levels it will assist with keeping sharps injuries and exposures at a minimum.  Proper PPE, a post exposure plan, and proper knowledge of universal standards make an amazing recipe for success and safety in the workplace.

Bloodborne pathogens is important for cleaning employees and staff to know about because you may be cleaning a medical facility and take out the contaminated trash by accident and there are specific procedures in place for taking those out. I actually had that happen in one of my medical facilities. She had just started working and was removing trash from the facility and also removed the biohazard.

This was a huge mistake on her part but also on my part as well because I felt like she wasn’t being properly trained. I also feel like a horrible employer because I do not have a OSHA control plan in place. This is something that I was really embarrassed to say.

Bloodborne pathogens is not something that you take lightly because this can be detrimental to someone’s livelihood actually causing death. I am going to make sure I start working on getting this into place starting today. When she accidentally removed the trash I spoke with the owner of the dentist and he was highly upset and that could have easily cost me my contract. Luckily it didn’t but this is something we all need to take into consideration when staffing and having people orient at medical facilities.

Cleaning personnel have numerous dangers of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens and must use precautions when removing trash, laundry or cleaning after a sick person. Precautions can prevent serious illness or even death. OSHA developed the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard in the prevention of the spread of pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and that can cause disease in humans such as Hep B and HIV. Transmission occurs when a person comes in contact with these pathogens with their mucus membranes such as nose, mouth or open wounds. ALL blood and body fluids should be considered potentially infectious. The best defense in combating exposure is a good offense. Always follow universal precautions and wear protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection and protective clothing. NEVER eat, drink, smoke or apply lip balm in areas of possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Do not manually compress trash and never reuse towels or sponges. Use properly color coded containers and bags when disposing of bloodborne pathogens. And most importantly if exposed to bloodborne pathogens immediately contact your supervisor and a medical professional.

Its always better to be overly prepared in life, just as its always better to clean and disinfect to a medical standard in all aspects of your cleaning company. Healthy clients and healthy coworkers are essential to any business and following your medical cleaning training will improve other aspects of your services.

Cleaning your residential clients homes to a higher standard is an easy way to impress your clients by showing that you care for their health and wellbeing and will more likely assure you future business. Going above and beyond sets a certain precedence that a lot of cleaning companies are lacking due to incorrect training.

Ways you can increase your health and safety and that of your clients is to ensure that you are wearing the proper PPE during a residential clean. If your clients see you making that extra effort will most likely, pleasantly surprise them. Use the 4 wipe method to remove and dirt grime or debris from all surfaces and follow up with a disinfecting treatment for the surface and make sure you use the proper chemical on the correct surface and that it stays wet for the recommended length of time.

Also be sure never to pack by hand a resident or a commercial properties trash as you are at a high risk of being cut by something under the top layer of trash. B sure to use a new rag each room to clean with so as to not transfer any germs or bacteria from one place to another

Bloodborne pathogens are a life or death matter. A simple accidental prick on the finger could mean a lifetime of hospital visits . That being said, it is very important for cleaning employees and staff to know and understand how to spot and disinfect these pathogens . The cleaning industry has multiple avenues , and it is imperative that we operate and clean effectively.

Bloodborne pathogens are present everywhere. When cleaning and sanitizing areas of high exposure, one must be vigilant and aware of such fluids. For example, if a cleaning employee is tasked with sanitizing and disinfecting an area where blood, saliva or other bodily fluids are present; they should be well versed on how to clean up the area while keeping themselves protected as well. Understanding what type of cleaning agent to use in various situations will insure that both the employee and public are safe.

Having a thorough knowledge of bloodborne pathogens and how to properly clean exposed areas, remains pivotal when cleaning .

Larry again, from High-Speed Solutions LLC.

Today’s topic is “How Important Are Janitors & Janitorial Staff To Our Daily Lives?” I could give you many reasons, today we will cover just a few that, in my opinion, are most relevant to today. First and foremost, public health! Anybody can pick up a rag and wipe off the sink. Anybody can wipe the mirror with some Windex or generic glass cleaner. However, only a trained professional will have the knowledge and expertise to know the correct type of cleaner to use on each surface to ensure longevity of the material, while getting the best clean.

Since COVID, I have personally been chasing every piece of knowledge and certification relating to disinfection. Also, understanding the levels of cleaning to ensure my customers receive the absolute best quality I have to offer and that after my services, the facility is 100% safer and cleaner for everyone involved.

Aside from health, hiring a professional janitorial service allows business owners to focus on their company’s goals and intent, without worrying about the cleanliness of their work environment or safety of their employees.

The importance of cleaning staff and decon teams being properly trained in handling potentially infected body fluids is hugely important. The possibility of highly infectious pathogens being communicated to cleaning staff that are not practicing safe cleaning practices and/ or not wearing the proper PPE is very real. An educated staff on BBP procedures is the best way to avoid any exposure.

While there will always be the need to prevent against the contraction of illnesses like HIV, Hepatitis and many others, with the current COVID-19 pandemic the dangers are heightened even further. As increased demand for decontamination and medical cleaning is rapidly approaching it crucial that all cleaning staff have the proper training in how to properly protect themselves.

Another element of proper BBP training is not just for the safety and health of the employee who is doing the cleaning itself, but also for the public at large. Properly decontaminating infected or potentially infected surfaces in both public and private settings will be a a major part of lessening the danger of the outbreak. Improperly trained and equipped cleaning staff are also potentially carriers of COVID-19 or other communicable diseases and may spread illness.

HEALTHLY. It is something everyone wants to be and every manager director nurse or staff member strive to achieve for patients and coworkers. This is why it is so important to hire a cleaning company that is knowledgeable and certified to do it correctly. If your cleaning company doesnt know how to properly clean rooms and medical facilities your risk for lawsuits is high from patients contacting a HAI. 1 in 20 people who are hospitalized contract a HAI and 1.7 million are reported to the CDC each year which 99,000 people die from it each year.

There are 3 contact based precautions to prevent the spread of Bloodborne pathogens and wearing the proper PPE and cleaning rooms and linens are a strong first step to combat the spread of infection. Cleaning high touch surfaces should be done as follows, Wipe are 4x to remove debris and germs, spray with disinfectant and wait the appropriate time listed on the label to make sure that germs and bacteria and virus' are killed or nuetralized, reappllying solution as necessary and then wiping clean with a wet rag from a disinfectant solution bucket.

Be sure to follow proper procedures on cleaning bodily fluids up and linen with bodily fluids on them. Always be gentle and fold the corners in and then the sides, fold inward and place in a linen bag and never place on the ground.
