It's in the same family of disease as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which the CDC describes as "a rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurodegenerative disorder."

A Palmer company is getting ready to ship out the first piece of machinery made under its multi-million-dollar contract for the Navy, using technology 15 years in the making.
The final product is called MCRRS, short for Mobile Cleaning Reclaim Recycle System. It's designed to clean flight decks on aircraft carriers.
Triverus CEO Hans Vogel is the man behind the idea.
"Sometimes people talk about us being like high-tech janitors, and that's kind of what we are," Vogel said.
The Navy needed a new method of keeping their flight decks clean and safe, according to Vogel. He wanted to create something that would prevent oil and fuel spills from slickening the deck as well as prevent particles or debris from being sucked into aircraft engines, all while keeping the environment safe.

Cleaning, which soon became the main source of Land’s income (she also did yardwork), proved grueling and tedious labor. To every house, she lugged “two spray bottles, one container of powdered Comet, two sponges, one pair of yellow gloves, 50 white rags, two dusters, one Oreck vacuum, two mop handles.” As a rule, she started in the upper left corner of the building or room and worked her way across and down until she was done — not unlike a reader. Her boss referred to her as the business’s best cleaner. Clients who had found fault with other employees did not complain about her.

During the research, a control group of 787 women from Massachusetts who have been diagnosed with breast cancer were compared to healthy (non-cancer diagnosed) 721 women of the same or similar age who have lived in or around the same area. All participants were questioned about their family health history, living habits such as eating, smoking, alcohol use, exercise, etc. They were also asked about their use of pesticides and cleaning products.
The Outcome
The results from the study show that the top 25% of women who reported highest use of cleaning products were at least 2 times more likely to develop breast cancer than those who reported the lowest use. The participants who indicated that they use air fresheners and mould and mildew removers often had 70% increased chance of cancer. These statistics sound really scary, but there is a spinner.

This afternoon, a coalition of lawmakers and members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) held a press conference to announce a concerted push for contractor back pay.
The Fair Compensation for Low-Wage Contractor Employees Act, supported by a number of Democrats in the House and Senate, would provide up to $600 per paycheck in back pay for furloughed federal contracted employees, including janitorial, food and security workers, tapping into money already allocated to pay workers in January..

How to Green Clean Your Washing Machine
First things first, the seals and gasket cavities need to be taken care of. Take some old towels and soak them in white vinegar for a while. Place the towels inside of the gasket cavity and leave them for an hour. This allows the mold and dirt to loosen up, making it easier to clean off. Using a fresh, clean towel, wipe off the gasket cavities. Using an old toothbrush, scrub off the remaining residue from the cavities and the door seals, and wipe clean afterword’s.
Now, turn on your washer to the hottest setting. To increase efficiency, ensure that the setting is using the largest load and longest cycle as well. This helps to wash and rinse off the remaining residue in the gasket cavities. Use Vinegar and Baking Soda ...

Government cleaning contractors may not getpaid back after the shutdown is over.
"Let’s say I have a janitorial service and I clean buildings for Tinker Air Force. If the government shuts down, so they no longer hire me…my company to do that and I no longer send employees to do that work…those employees, I’m not going to get paid as a company for work that wasn’t performed which means those employees that work for me, they’re not going to get paid for work that wasn’t employed," he explained. "It can be rough. Some are having to look for second jobs or maybe first jobs.
Maybe they’re looking to do something else and this is something people need to keep in mind. Sometimes working for a federal contract might sound like, oh this is going to be good. This is going to be stable. But there are times when you have conflict in government that are causes these types of periods."

He created green cleaning products for the locker room. Now he’s bringing them to your laundry room. - Stephen Steinberg wants to do your laundry.
The Raw Athletics founder, a former University of Maryland club hockey player who began mixing batches of cleaning spray in his dorm room in 2008, has evolved a single product into a line of eco-friendly products for the sports industry — from professional and college teams to gyms and fitness studios.
But with the launch of a new detergent, the D.C.-based entrepreneur is eyeing a different market: you.
Steinberg’s business-to-business model made his startup a profitable operation, now with seven core products under its Vapor Fresh brand: a powder laundry detergent, disinfecting gym wipes, deodorizing spray, shoe and glove powder, and absorbent inserts for gloves and bags.

New Janitorial Service For Vancouver 7.5 Million Dollar Cleaning Contract
A new janitorial service will be cleaning Vancouver City Hall and other city-owned or occupied buildings starting in February.
The City Council on Monday authorized City Manager Eric Holmes to award a five-year contract to Del Sol Inc. of Pasco. The city will pay the company up to $7.5 million over the span, with an anticipated $1.1 million the first year.
Del Sol emerged as the preferred contractor following a bid process that included the previous contractor, ABM On-Site Services West Inc., Brian Carlson, city public works director, told the council at its meeting Monday. Four other companies also submitted bids in November.
ABM had a three-year contract with the city since Oct. 1, 2015, with an up to two-year extension opportunity. Officials with the local ABM office, part of a New York-based publicly traded corporation with about $6.4 billion in annual sales, told Vancouver officials earlier this year they would not renew the contract because of a significant increase in their internal cost structure.
The contract and Washington law require the vendor to pay the state’s prevailing wages, which Carlson said is $21.12 an hour. The amount can be tallied as pay only or pay plus benefits, Carlson said.
