The 2012 city contract with United Maintenance was for $99.4 million, a payout that has since ballooned by nearly $8 million in 2017.
“United Maintenance came in and underbid the contract right off the start to get the work,” says Tom Balanoff, president of SEIU Local 1, the labor union that once represented O’Hare’s janitors. “And then they turned back on the city and said, ‘Okay, now we got the work — give us more money.’”
United Maintenance also came under fire in a 2015 federal lawsuit, filed by some O’Hare janitors accusing the firm of wage theft. The company settled the lawsuit last fall for $850,000 but admitted no wrongdoing.

I'll be the first to admit that I have more than a few "clean freak" habits. For instance, I almost always change my toothbrush after a long trip,
and I put the water bottle that I travel with in the dishwasher several times before I actually begin to use it again. After watching countless people wash their dishes with the same dirty one over and over again in hostels (and then leaving them in the stagnant sink water — yuck!),

The global janitorial services market is primarily segmented into two categories: residential and commercial. The residential market consists of maid services, window, carpet, window and other services. The commercial cleaning segment primarily focuses on window cleaning, vacuuming, floor care, and related services.
Among the two segments, the commercial segment accounts for a relatively larger share of the janitorial services market. Janitorial service is a highly labor intensive market and growth of the market largely depends on growth of the real estate market.Due to its dependence on the real estate market, the janitorial services market suffered a downturn during the economic recession post-2008. The market also suffered a decline due to collapse of various mortgage obligations. Many government entities and industrial companies make a long-term contract to clean facilities, such trends help in the growth of global janitorial services market.

QUEBEC — A school janitor who recently won $60 million in the lottery with his wife said Monday he has already called his boss to say he’s quitting.
The couple from Saguenay, 200 kilometres north of Quebec City, say they still don’t know what they will do with all the money, which they won in last Friday’s Lotto Max draw.
“It’s a bit surreal,” Marie-Josee Picard told a news conference at the Loto-Quebec offices in Quebec City, adding she and her husband, Carl Villeneuve, are still in shock.

The Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center board approved a contract Friday for maintenance and janitorial services.
The contract is with Mabel Largaespada Dean’s Services, which will provide janitorial services for $22 per hour per person, and maintenance/lawn care for $40 per hour per person. The board previously voted to seek out a contractor to handle those services after concerns that business manager Heather Cannell was devoting time to cleaning bathrooms and setting up tables that she should be spending on marketing the event center.

Two local cleaning services companies are seeing steady growth without advertising.
Elaine Meyers, president of Meyers Cleaning Service in Jenison, said her company’s services were in such high demand last year, they had to turn customers away.
“We had a lot of companies that actually called us,” she said. “We weren’t out beating anyone’s doors down. We get a lot of referral business from companies who want to make a change in their cleaning service.”
Meyers Cleaning, which offers commercial janitorial services, residential and commercial carpet and upholstery care, and cleaning of grouted tile and hard floors, saw West Michigan revenue of $1,259,000 in 2016 over $1,132,885 in 2015.

More than a year after they expected New Orleans’ “living wage” law would give them a raise, workers who clean city buildings are suing Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s administration for, in their view, failing to abide by the law. United Labor Unions Local 100, which represents the 40 to 50 workers on the city's janitorial contract, filed suit Monday in Civil District Court alleging that the city owes them back pay for extending a contract with their employer without making it comply with a mandate in the law signed by Landrieu requiring them to be paid more.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that between 2010 and 2015, plaintiff was an employee and worked solely for Tavares Janitorial Services Inc. but was misclassified as an independent contractor. He alleges he worked for the defendant in excess of 40 hours within a work week and should be compensated at a rate of one-and-one-half times his regular hourly rate.
The plaintiff holds Tavares Janitorial Services Inc. and Tavares responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to pay overtime premiums for all the overtime hours, and showed reckless disregard for the provisions of the FLSA and Internal Revenue Code for not withholding taxes from the plaintiff’s earnings.
