It’s the season for giving — the cold and flu, that is.

Local health officials are offering advice and tips to those looking to stay healthy and away from the sneezing and coughing this holiday season.

The timing and severity of the flu, a contagious respiratory illness, can be unpredictable year-to-year. But it’s usually prevalent during the late stages of fall and winter months, according to health officials.

While the New York State Department of Health hasn’t deemed it severe flu season yet, Emelia Lindquist Harley, nursing director for UPMC Chautauqua WCA, said there have been reported cases. Lindquist said people of all ages should be getting the flu vaccine. Young children, the elderly, those with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women are among those highly recommended to get a yearly flu shot.

For 20 minutes, Fernando was threatened and forced to clean and mop the bathroom before he was allowed to leave the store, his wife claims in the suit.

The incident caused Fernando to be “humiliated, disgraced and injured in his feelings, emotionally and mentally,” the lawsuit says.

The emotional distress caused by the situation was so severe that it “resulted in the death of Fernando,” the suit says.

“In all my years in the court system, this is new to me, never seen it,” said WFTV legal analyst Belvin Perry.

Perry said the claim for false imprisonment is a compelling one, but proving it led to the man’s death, which the lawsuit alleges, could be a stretch.

The Texas arm of the Service Employees International Union filed for bankruptcy this weekend after a jury found it responsible for a campaign to bully a holdout janitorial firm into accepting the union’s organizing terms.

The Texas branch of the Service Employees International Union, one of the nation’s largest unions, sought chapter 11 protection Saturday at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Corpus Christi, facing a $7.8 million judgment it cannot afford to pay.

The U.S. Department of Labor has fined an Oregon cleaning company $70,000 for failing to pay employees the minimum wage and overtime.

Investigators found Stars Cleaning Service based in Beaverton paid its janitorial employees a fixed daily rate without regard to the number of hours they worked. The employees worked on average more than 12 hours a day, six days a week, investigators found.  

Eugenia Galán Carrillo worked at Stars Cleaning Service and has accused owner Estela Ramos of harassing and intimidating the workers after the investigation began.  

“The owner always threatened us,” she told OPB in an interview conducted in Spanish. “She would say to us that she would call immigration, or she always took money from our checks, threatening us all the time.”

A recent ban on cleaning high-rise windows is not sufficient to protect Hong Kong’s domestic workers from exploitation, campaigners argue after a shocking photograph recently emerged of a helper cleaning a window at a 15th-floor apartment in the Mid-Levels.

The government this week revealed details of a new clause to be added to all domestic helper employment contracts, prohibiting them from cleaning external windows above the ground floor unless the window is fitted with a secure grille.

The ban, proposed by the Philippines Consulate, was initially delayed for one month to allow Hong Kong lawmakers more time to establish the specific wording of the new clause.

In North Jersey over just a four-week period, two kids in separate cases were hospitalized after ingesting an industrial cleaning product that was brought into the home by a family member.

Both children are expected to make a full recovery, but poison experts are urging parents to be more cautious about the products they bring indoors.

In each case, a commercial stove cleaner/degreaser was taken home by a family member who works in a restaurant, according to the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System. The product was transferred into a typical container, such as a water bottle, making it even more appealing to young eyes.

“Whenever we hear about a child who drinks or ingests an industrial strength cleaner, we get much more worried because we know it can have a very devastating effect,” said NJPIES Medical Director Dr. Diane Calello.

EDWARDSVILLE — The County Board earlier this month awarded a new contract for janitorial services at some county buildings after the present service provider, Advanced Outsource Solutions, received multiple complaints in recent months.

At its Oct. 19 meeting, the Madison County Board voted to approve a contract with CR Systems in lieu of exercising an option to extend the current one-year contract with Alton-based Advanced Outsource Solutions, a subsidiary of Challenge Unlimited. The current contract pays $232,602; CR Systems submitted the low bid of $230,000 this time around, which includes providing janitorial services to the county’s administration building, courthouse and the Madison County Health Department building in Wood River, among others.

The county’s Buildings and Facilities Management Committee voted in September to not renew the contract with Advanced Outsource Solutions. On Tuesday, Madison County Administrator Joe Parente said multiple customer services issues were reported since the company began cleaning county buildings last year.

“Any time you change janitorial contracts, there’s a period of time, a transition period, and the staff attempted to work with the management during this transition period. They never were able to get things quite right,” Parente said. “It was basically customer service-type issues — things not being cleaned, lights being left on, just a wide variety.”
