Why Professional Cleaners must be Knowledgeable about Blood-Borne Pathogens

As professional suppliers of janitorial services, we come into contact with a variety of different bodily fluids every day.  Diseases such as hepatitis B, HBV, and HIV can potentially be spread through the microorganisms within these bodily fluids.  The blood-borne standard that OSHA has established has been expanded to every profession that comes into proximity with potentially infectious materials.  How staff approaches these environments can literally make the difference between life and death.

The infections can be transmitted when these pathogens come into contact with an employee’s nose, mouth, or any breaks in the skin.  By using universal precautions, employees can easily protect themselves from these dangerous pathogens.  Under these precautions, employees are to assume that at all time blood is contaminated with blood-borne pathogens.  Always wear protective equipment, and ensure that it is not damaged or torn.  Never bend or re-cap needles.  Make use of disposable gloves, eye protection, face masks, and gowns.  Never eat, drink, smoke, or apply lip balm in areas where contaminants may be found.  Dispose of contaminants in a way that won’t cause splashing or splattering, and never re-use towels that were used for clean-up.

Besides protecting ourselves, we are responsible for containing the blood-borne pathogens and de-sanitizing the area so that other healthcare providers and patients are not exposed to them.  It is crucial to use the correct disinfecting products to successfully accomplish this.  By following these universal guidelines, professional janitorial employees can effectively prevent the transmission and infection of dangerous diseases.

Now days we have different and better environmental techniques to build and if we have done this changes on the construction side, why we shouldn't have it on the cleaning side.

If we look to preserve the environment, we have to do it in every aspect. We want to provide a green cleaning to new buildings and a green janitorial to existing ones.

The Swept Away MDI LLC is pleased to announce that our company is now IJCSA Green Cleaning Certified! Our community has a diverse population and is on its way in adopting a green cleaning way of life.  A green cleaning service would fall right in line with the policies and the direction that the community is taking.  This supports the decision we have made as a company to promote a cleaner and healthier environment for our community and its residents.

We plan to use cleaning agents that are naturally derived and or plant based and some will be made in house by our company and used specifically for persons who intend to transition to a “green clean” atmosphere. We have also implemented a training program for our employees to ensure best practices of the green clean techniques in their regular cleaning service.

This green cleaning program will greatly enhance the well-being of our clients and staff by reducing the amount of harmful chemicals we use and promote our social responsibility to the environment. We also plan to implement this type of cleaning method in our own homes as we plan to “practice what we preach”. The implementation of this program will also serve to educate persons in the community of the toxicity of the chemicals they are currently using and the tremendous benefits to be derived financially as well as the reduction in human health risks.

The goal of the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard is to establish guidelines for organizations to develop a program providing information, training and to protect individuals from occupational exposures to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Pathogens are disease-causing microorganisms. Bloodborne pathogens are viruses or bacteria present in human blood and body fluids, which can infect and cause disease in humans.

The most common ways bloodborne pathogens spread are through sexual transmission or IV drug use. However, any contact with infected blood or body fluids carries the risk of potential infection.  It is important to understand what the hazards of bloodborne pathogens are, and what preventative measures you can take to protect yourself from exposure. Your attitude is a vital part of protecting yourself. The right attitude means taking Universal Precautions. This means that you treat all human blood and body fluids as infectious.

Personal Protective Equipment includes clothing and equipment worn by an individual during activities, which may result in exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Personal protective equipment always starts with gloves but may also include gowns, face shields, eye protection and pocket masks. An exposure incident is defined as a specific eye, mouth, nose or skin contact with potentially infectious materials.
