It took six years, a 12-day hunger strike, and an unrelenting series of downtown protests, but retail janitors in the Twin Cities have finally formed a union.
The 600 janitors who clean the Twin Cities’ shiniest department stores hail from dozens of countries. Many worked in isolation as employees of disconnected cleaning contractors who often took advantage of their immigration status to cut corners on wage laws.

SPRINGDALE -- Work release inmates will be replaced with janitors to work in the City Administration Building, a move prompted by alleged misbehavior.
"We're going to hire employees to take over that role of maintenance and janitorial services," Mayor Doug Sprouse said after Tuesday's City Council meeting.
The City Council voted approved spending $26,820 to hire janitors to work in the building at 201 Spring St., for the rest of the year. Arkansas Department of Corrections inmates housed at Northwest Arkansas Work Release Center in Springdale had been doing the work for more than 15 years, Melissa Reeves, public relations director for the city, said last week.
"We're looking to redistribute them to work somewhere else, possibly in another building," Reeves said. "It's part of an overall strategy to increase security in the administration building."
Thousands of Floridians are still without power more three days after Hurrican Mathew skirted up the east coast with 100 mph winds and torrential rain.
Duke Energy and Florida Power and Light were reporting more than 75,000 customers without power across the state this morning. More than half of those were just in Volusia County — the hardest hit area in Central Florida.
Downed trees and power lines, along with localized flooding were a common sight throughout Central Florida. Communities closer to the coast also saw roof and building damage, along with severe beach erosion.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Potentially dangerous chemicals can be found in every room in your home.
“Any products in your house are a poison,” explains IU Health Dr. Salvatore Migliore.
Dr. Migliore says it’s important we know air fresheners, cleaning products and even burning candles can all cause us harm, if we use them too often.
“The father of toxicology says the dose makes the poison. Therefore, anything that you actually use will be toxic if you take too much of it, get exposed to too much of it,” said Dr. Migliore.
According to a study by the Environmental Working Group, 53 percent of cleaning products under review contain lung-harming ingredients. Windshield wiper fluid, for example, contains methanol, which can cause blindness. Dryer sheets contain trace amounts of formaldehyde and benzene, which is a known carcinogen.
