How often do people actually think about the harmful effects of everyday cleaners? Even the most health-conscious individuals may not consider the impacts of those cleaners and what the toxins might be doing to their health.  Regardless of “Danger” warnings placed on labels, most people use those products and go about their day feeling a sense of accomplishment for the clean [toxic] smelling home or business.  After all, having a clean living or working environment is comforting.

At Green Bright Cleaning Service, we feel that it’s important to provide awareness and education about those toxic products.  Awareness of toxic chemicals is the first step in the right direction to a healthier home or business.  But we don’t just want to make people aware, we want to provide an acceptable solution.  Do people know that “green” cleaning products work just as well as toxic cleaning products?  Probably not.  Otherwise, why would they choose to poison the air they breathe?

“Green” cleaning is only the beginning of where we should be.  But it’s a great start.  And the movement is starting to gain momentum as more and more customers ask for green, eco-friendly, recyclable and sustainable solutions.  It’s a peace of mind that has merit.  Look for green cleaning companies near you at the Green Cleaning Service Directory.

OSHA estimates that 5.6 million workers in the health care industry are at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Workers exposed to bloodborne pathogens are at risk for serious or life-threatening illnesses. Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms present in blood that can cause disease in humans. Diseases such as HBV, HCV, or HIV. Providing staff with the proper protocol for cleaning and handling potentially hazardous materials reduces the risk of exposure.

Universal precautions work as a prevention to exposure. This requires the employee to treat all fluids as potentially hazardous. Potentially hazardous fluids should be handled with gloves, goggles and face shields to limit exposure. Trash bags should not be pushed down to avoid risk of getting pricked by sharp objects.

Even though precautions have been put into place, mistakes still occur. In this case, having a Post Exposure Management Plan is necessary. The focus of the plan should be on what an employee can do after exposure has occurred. The employees and staff should be aware of the need to flush the area, contact their supervisor, and contact a health care professional. In the end, prevention, precaution, and post exposure should be key elements of employee training.

The harmful nature of blood is why OSHA developed the Blood borne Pathogens Certification, to protect staff and employee.

Microorganisms can be transmitted by needles, cuts, abrasions, bites and  through the mucous membrane such as nose and mouth.

It is the employers responsibility to provide the right person protection equipment.

Every day cleaning chemicals contain harmful chemicals that we may be unaware of. The overall goal of cleaning is to have a clean and healthy environment for our family or businesses. We use cleaning products that promise to make our homes cleaner, more sterile, smell better which they actually do. We remove the germs and minimize viruses and bacteria, but in the process, we inhale toxic chemicals and expose our loved ones unknowingly.

How do we work to trade in our hazardous cleaning products for natural green products? The chemicals found in common cleaning products can have many negative impacts, including contributing to asthma, cancer, and increased birth defects, according to the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Cleaning Supplies and Your Health. With the potential negative impact of current chemicals in cleaning products, the need for green cleaning is necessary. The increasing popularity of “being green” has caused many companies to see this as an opportunity to capitalize on its popularity.  Green washing is causing a lot of distrust in the idea of being green and may sway consumers to continue to use the products they are comfortable with, which may include toxic ingredients. Also, many companies do not fully disclose their ingredients, which makes evaluation about the health and environmental impacts difficult.

Every day cleaning products may contain toxic ingredients. For example, butyl cellosolve can be found in many spray cleaners, and all-purpose cleaners. Despite being found in common products, the products still continue to be used. Butyl cellosolve can irritate the mucous membranes and cause liver and kidney damage.

Using natural green products, inflict minimal or no harm on the environment. Green brands can help to push for a cleaner environments, such as Method products. Along with the products being naturally derived, the company also works to make sure every bottle they design goes through a rigorous process to ensure that it’s as green as possible. The goal is not to advertise for companies but to choose products that work best for my clients.

In the end, the use of green products is one certain solution to save our planet and ourselves. Going green as we maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of our homes and businesses can lessen pollution, health problems, and climate change and save water, petroleum and trees. It will also reduce the amount of waste produced by commercial manufacturers too.
