Flu shots might sting. They might leave you achy. They might not be fail safe. But, experts say, get one anyway.

New Jersey health care providers are touting flu shots as the best way to prevent the outbreak of an illness that last year resulted in a record 900,000 hospitalizations and 80,000 deaths nationwide.

"We’re still trying to wrap our head around that number," Dr. Roger Thompson, a physician with Integrated Medical Alliance in Middletown, said. "Just think of that number."

It comes on the heels of a devastating year in which New Jersey alone reported nearly 26,000 cases of the flu, including the deaths of five children.

Len Iamundo, 62, of Middletown, is taking no chances. He didn't used to get the flu shot. But since he had open heart surgery eight years ago, he and his wife, Denise, heed their doctors' advice.

BOSTON — A janitor says in a lawsuit against his former employer that he was discriminated against and mocked because of his devout Roman Catholic faith.

The suit filed Tuesday by Arcadio Cruz says supervisors and co-workers for C&W Facilities Services, which provides janitorial service to Boston's Logan International Airport, taunted him for being open about the importance of religion in his life, visiting the airport chapel on lunch breaks, and carrying a Bible and rosary beads.

The Lynn man says one supervisor told him to "call your God to clean the urinal."

He says the company fired him after he complained about bullying and unfair treatment.

Custodian Herman Gordon has been spreading kindness at Bristol University for more than 11 years. This summer, students of the UK university decided it was time to return the favor. Students launched a crowdfunding campaign to send Gordon, originally from Jamaica, on a weeklong trip to Kingston to see his family for the first time in nearly a decade. "I started it because

I know everybody loves Herman for his happy energy," said medical student Hadi Al-Zubaidi, who had the idea for the fundraiser. "I thought sending him to his home country of Jamaica would be a beautiful way of giving back for all that he does."

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) - Fayetteville residents are still recovering from the impacts left by Florence.

In the Cedar Falls neighborhood near Cedar Creek Road, piles of debris could be found along Bombay Drive on Sunday.

Some have returned to their homes, while others said they're looking for a new place to live.

Army Sgt. Roderick Haynes is staying with a friend in Virginia after coming to find his Fayetteville home was damaged during the storm.

"It was hurting," Haynes said. "I was in awe. I didn't know what to think. It was my first time going through the experience, and it was something new to me. I didn't know what to do."

Haynes had little time to prepare for the storm after returning from a deployment in Africa.

"Not having the knowledge and understanding, and someone informing me, or having the insurance to cover half the damages, or all of the damages in that home, makes it more devastating as well, too," he said.

Everyday household cleaning products may be producing unintended consequences for children. According to a study, disinfectants have the ability to change gut bacteria, potentially leading to higher body mass index (BMI).

The study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, found that those who lived in households where disinfectants were used weekly had a higher risk of being overweight by age 3 than those who lived in houses where eco-friendly substances were used.

Janitors who have survived rape and sexual harassment in the workplace on Monday launched a 100-mile walk from San Francisco to Sacramento to urge Gov. Jerry Brown to support legislation to boost sexual harassment and violent training and prevention measures.

Assembly Bill 2079, introduced by Assembly Member Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, includes provisions for peer training and counseling, which supporters say is essential for helping immigrant women and women in hidden professions like janitorial work learn their rights from someone they trust.

The walk, which began at the Golden Gate Bridge this morning and paused for a noon rally at San Francisco’s City Hall, began the same day as a billboard campaign in the Bay Area urging Brown to sign the legislation.

    3. They can keep you from getting sick

If nothing else, you should be wearing gloves to protect yourself against bacteria while cleaning.

Think about the places you clean regularly -- the bathroom sink, the toilet, the kitchen sink. All three are places that are just teeming with bacteria. Oh and that sponge you use to clean the dishes? It's one of the most germ ridden thing in your home.

Clean those places with bare hands and you run the risk of directly infecting yourself with nasty pathogens.

    14 Wing Greenwood

GREENWOOD, N.S. - The union representing Canada’s federal public sector employees is worried that a plan to privatize cleaning services at two air force bases signals a concerning trend.

Colleen Coffey, Atlantic Canada executive vice-president with PSAC, says seven term-contract, unionized cleaners at 14 Wing Greenwood were recently notified that as of Sept. 30 their jobs would be terminated before their term positions could have rolled into full-time jobs.

Instead, the government plans to contract out their jobs to a private company. The remaining 25 full-time cleaners will not be laid off but will have their positions replaced by contractors when they retire or leave the base. At Ontario’s CFB Kingston, there will be no immediate layoffs but the 186 unionized cleaners there will also eventually be replaced by contractors.
