Knowledge of Bloodborne Pathogens and the standards in place are important safeguards in the prevention and spread of pathogens. Their associated diseases which may result in illness and potentially death can be prevented through awareness. and consistency.

Bloodborne Pathogens are pathogenic microscopic organisms found in human blood. They cause diseases some of which include Hepatitis B(HBV) or  HIV. Common points of exposure occurs via the mucus membrane in either the nose or mouth, or cuts or other breaks in the skin. Blood, saliva, or vomit can potentially contain Bloodborne Pathogens.

The best way to prevent exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens is by following the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard developed by OSHA. Guidelines are provided in the form of Universal Precautions which makes the recommendation that all bodily fluids be treated as potentially infectious, and that guidelines are followed at all times to minimize exposures.

By continuous education on best practices, and constant diligence in their execution, exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens can be greatly minimized and create a happy workspace for all those involved.
