Importance of Staff Bloodborne Pathogen Training

23 Jan 2024 6:26 PM | Deleted user

Understanding how bloodborne pathogens work is vital for all staff, cleaning and non-cleaning alike, to function in the workplace safely. Additionally, understanding the risk factors of a particular workplace further help staff be safe- not every workplace will experience the same situations that could pose a health risk. For example, a library functions as a community center that offers resources to people of all backgrounds, including housing help, adult education programs, and health-based programs. Thus, recognizing the communities and their particular circumstances can assist in creating a plan to manage exposure to bloodborne pathogens, such as ensuring that there are needle bins accessible, PPE available at all staff stations, and proper protocol.

Beyond assessing the workplace conditions, it is important to know about the existence of bloodborne pathogens solely for the fact that contracting such a pathogen can cause life-altering illness at best, and life-ending illness at worst. Furthermore, it can be spread to additional people. The pathogen does not stop at one individual, and combatting exposure through sturdy protective measures will slow down the cycle of contracting such illnesses. Taking the time to effectively identify and assess a situation involving bloodborne pathogens can not only protect oneself from harm, but their family members, friends, and coworkers.

Finally, knowing about bloodborne pathogens allows staff to understand that they do not exist wholly in blood, but can be present in all bodily fluids. Used needles, soiled clothes, and even events where there is a behavioral component (biting, spitting, etc.) must be treated as if they are contaminated with bloodborne pathogens. This guarantees that protective measures are taken in ALL scenarios, rather than just events involving blood. It also ensures that we maintain consistency in handling such events, reducing the chances of an accidental exposure.
