Growing outbreaks in the Midwest and Northeast are most responsible for pushing up the national numbers, and that comes after many weeks of high case counts and stress on states in the Mountain West where some hospitals are dealing with crisis levels of patients.

"There are still large swaths of the country under-immunized and even among states that are relatively well-vaccinated, like Colorado, New Mexico, Minnesota and Vermont, we're seeing sustained transmission," says Rutherford.

The uptick in cases hasn't yet translated into a national spike in new hospital admissions, which tend to trail a rise in infections by several weeks. However, the grim situation in some parts of the West and upper Midwest offers a concerning picture for other states where cases are now climbing.

MARTIN: So here we are, well into our second year of this pandemic. And there is not a nationwide surge, but COVID-19 is still spreading. It's affecting daily activities. How should we think about that? I mean, I think that, you know, some people are saying, this is what it's going to be like. This is the new normal.

WACHTER: Yeah. I think I'm increasingly in that boat. And to make clear, I don't think that's a good new normal. I'd love us to be in a place where COVID was receded as a part of our lives and we were back to 2019. But I think it's increasingly clear that that's not likely to happen, that this is going to be with us for the foreseeable future. And we're going to be on this roller coaster where cases go up, and then they come down, and then they go up again.

Colorado's COVID-19 infections continue to rise faster than any state in the nation, new data shows.

Threat level: At the same time, the number available hospital beds across the state is dwindling — hitting a low of 80 at the start of this week.

What's new: Colorado now says every resident 18 and older is eligible for a COVID-19 booster under federal guidelines because the virus is spreading so rapidly across the state.

    • The state on Tuesday reactivated the crisis standards of care that prioritize treatment of patients and address staffing liabilities.

    • A Federal Emergency Management Agency team arrived in Pueblo to assist hospital staff overrun with COVID cases — a first for Colorado in the pandemic.
    • A special advisory issued by the state in partnership with Denver metro public health agencies urged residents to wear masks in crowded indoor public spaces and get vaccinated.

London — The coronavirus has been resurging across Europe, including in some places where it was thought to be well under control. A top world health official tells CBS News the trend shows that success today does not necessarily mean success tomorrow, and the United States should pay close attention.

    Virus Outbreak Bosnia

Europe has seen a jump of more than 50% in new coronavirus cases over the last month, and the World Health Organization has warned the continent could see another half of a million deaths by February. CBS News senior foreign correspondent Charlie D'Agata spoke with the top official ringing those alarm bells, who told him there's "grave concern" as Europe is once again under siege by COVID-19.

Global deaths from COVID-19 have now surpassed 5 million, according to the data released Monday from Johns Hopkins University's coronavirus tracker.

PITTSBURGH – An employee of a carpet cleaning service who claimed he was wrongfully terminated during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he objected to working in areas where social distancing and wearing of protective personal equipment was not being practiced, has seen his case dismissed in state court.

Zachary Holtzman of McKeesport first filed suit in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas on March 12 versus Cleaning Services Corporation (doing business as “ServiceMaster Carpet & Upholstery”), of Pitcairn.

According to the complaint, Holtzman was hired as a full-time area manager for the defendant near the end of 2019. During that time, the plaintiff resided with his elderly grandfather, for whom he provided care.

In March 2020, the suit explained that the COVID-19 pandemic took hold across the country, leading to Allegheny County issuing a stay-at-home order. Over the course of the pandemic, the stay-at-home orders were revised and the county began to let people return to work.

“Plaintiff advised defendant that because he cared for his elderly grandfather, who is an at-risk person for severe COVID-19, he could only work in situations where people could and did heed social distancing guidelines and wear appropriate PPE. In June of 2019, defendant sent plaintiff to the Jewish Community Center in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh,” the suit stated.
