Fred Vautour polished a mirror as he cleaned Boston College’s Robsham Theater on Friday.

Vautour said he never could have afforded a college education for five children on his salary of $60,000 a year. His wife, Debra, was a homemaker who now works the front desk at the Waltham Senior Center.

But because Vautour is a BC employee, all five children were able to attend the college tuition-free, which knocked about $51,000 off of BC’s $66,000 annual price tag. After scholarships, Vautour said, each child’s college education cost him about $3,000 per year.

Knowing that five college degrees were in reach kept him going, he said, night after night and year after year.

“It gave me a reason to be here,” Vautour said. “I used to joke with the vice president that I’d actually work for nothing because my kids are here because of that perk. I could care less if they even gave me a raise because my kids came here.

PHILADELPHIA — A field operations manager is suing ABM Janitorial Services, a former employer, citing alleged violation of the Family and Medical Leave Act and violation of wage laws.

Martin Campfield of Hatboro filed a complaint on April 19 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against ABM Janitorial Services alleging that the former employer violated the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Pennsylvania Minimum Wage Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that starting in July 2014, he routinely worked from 50-60 hours per week but he did not receive any compensation for worked performed in excess of 40 hours per workweek. On February 24, 2015, his wife fell into coma, according to the suit, which adds that due to his wife's health conditions, he was required to take some days off. He was transferred to a location about 1.5 hours from his home, was compensated at a reduced rate of pay and was not allowed to use a company service vehicle, the suit says, adding that he was forced to reject the new offer, and as such, his employment was terminated.

The plaintiff holds ABM Janitorial Services responsible because the defendant allegedly misclassified him as an exempt employee, failed to pay him overtime premium, interfered with right to protected family leave and constructively terminated his employment in retaliation for exercising his rights.

Hartford — A puzzling financial oversight has left a gap in the municipal budget, town officials have learned.

Hartford’s municipal Town Hall, which was the subject of a major $4.2 million renovation project completed last summer, typically is cleaned twice weekly by a contractor who provides janitorial services.

The contract is for about $30,000 each year, but interim Town Manager Pat MacQueen told the Selectboard during an April 26 meeting that the fiscal year 2016 budget did not fully fund that line item, for reasons unknown.

“The finance director and I have been scratching our heads over the janitorial budget for Town Hall,” MacQueen told the Selectboard. “This year’s budget includes about $14,700, which is about half of what was budgeted last year, and what was budgeted for next year.”

MacQueen told the Selectboard the cleaning service would be paid with money from other line item

Outsourced Vs. In House Janitorial Services

If you own a business, you understand the importance of budgeting your operational and overhead costs wisely.  While you understand the importance of maintaining your office or industrial building, you are not sure whether outsourcing or hiring in-house janitorial services is a better choice to keep your expenses low and your office sparkling.  While the quality of services offered is always a concern, there are several other factors that should be considered to determine whether outsourcing or in-house janitorial services is best.  Weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each and determine which method is most beneficial to your company’s bottom line.

In house custodial staff consists janitors that are directly employed by the company.  Because they are part of the workforce, your company will be responsible for performing background checks to ensure that the candidate is qualified and trustworthy.  Janitors have access to sensitive information and the personal belongings of your employees.....

Five janitorial staff members who work in Stanford’s academic center shared their needs and goals for their new labor contract with at least 40 students in a forum at the Markaz on April 14. The staff raised three key issues: wages, cost of living and medical benefits.

The worker’s forum was the latest joint effort by the SEIU United Service Workers West (USWW) union and Stanford’s Student And Labor Alliance (SALA) to win more favorable terms for Bay Area custodial staff in ongoing contract renegotiations. The negotiation process will culminate in a contract on April 30, which the union will vote on collectively.

Janitorial staff talk needs and goals for new labor contract

While Stanford has expressed interest in working with contractor C&W to grant campus custodial staff extra benefits, workers remain concerned about health insurance and wages amid soaring rental costs in the area. Other workers in the SEIU USWW union who work for corporate organizations may also face a more hostile renegotiation process.

Routine house cleaning, maintenance, cleaning an old shelf in the basement that had been there forever, I looked up and it had a false top, a top that no one's ever noticed. I saw the old motor sitting up there in the rafters," Thomas explained.

Thomas says he was quite surprised, and has no idea where the World War II-era explosive came from.

"Obviously curious, cautious, concerned, and so I thought about it for a little bit and looked at it," Thomas said.

Thomas comes from a military background, so he says he felt comfortable enough transporting it to the police department. That's when the authorities took over.

"Our officers were sent in to assess the situation, they looked at it and determined that it was a military ordinance appeared to be a rocket propelled grenade," said Steven Klein, assistant chief of the Fond du Lac Police Department.
